Alas, if only skates weren't so expensive. (Well, decent skates, anyway.) If I decide to go for another round of lessons after my first round is over, I'll probably bite the bullet and get some beginner/recreational skates.

I did have my toe sticking up in the air when I laced them that time, so maybe that was part of it. Next time I'll try keeping the blade flat.
