icepixieHuh. I just realized my LJ turned ten a couple of months ago. Wow. Freshman year of college doesn't seem like ten years ago, but I guess it is. Man.

Awesome practice today. A co-worker and I went to the midday session yesterday and it was packed with children, so I didn't get much done. Luckily, this afternoon's was almost empty. Lots of spinning space! I managed to eke out another half-revolution (now I'm up to 3 on the most successful attempts!), mostly because I finally forced my feet to go parallel instead of perpendicular to each other. My arms are still...less than good. But I also hit the "sweet spot" of the blade at least a couple of times, which is definite progress. It's much further back than I thought it was, and frankly so far back that I usually chicken out when I get to it and lean forward again. But I'll get there!
(...Let's not talk right now about how much my spins travel. We'll just pretend I'm doing twizzles. Yeah, that'll work.)
My half-swizzles clockwise on a circle are getting much better, almost as good as the counterclockwise ones. They have actual speed now, as opposed to going *scraaaaaaape, half-inch glide, stop; scraaaaaaape* Getting that knee bend rhythm helps so much.
Ooooh, and I taught myself a two-foot turn! Can't find a good video, but pretty much it's a way of changing direction forwards to backwards in a split second (ideally). You can do it backwards to forwards too, but that's well beyond me right now. I kind of learned it by accident--I wanted to turn around without going to the boards or making a big curve, and I knew the basic concept, so a little tinkering and voila.
Time got away from me, and I ended up spending 90 minutes instead of an hour practicing, so now my knees and ankles are protesting loudly. Also, the second toe on my right foot has gone a bit numb from poorly-fitting rentals. Time to buy skates? Time to buy skates! I just responded to the skating school director's email about doing just that. Eeeee. Let the roller coaster (and the money hemorrhaging) begin!
