The world does exist at 5:30. Who knew?

Despite the 7 AMness of it all, my first freestyle session was actually pretty awesome. It was me and three other people, two preteen girls and a guy in his twenties or so. SO MUCH ICE. NO TINY RECKLESS HOCKEY BOYS. I could skate backwards and not worry about running into people! And it was so quiet, except for our blades scraping along. Kind of eerie, actually.

The girls were working on single jumps, and the guy was a couple levels above me in basic skills, so I didn't feel nearly as out of place as I thought I might. On the other hand, riiight at the beginning, I made the classic absent-minded mistake of going on the ice with my guards on. You can't skate on guards. You really, really can't skate on guards.

...Yeah, my thigh is going to have a very large bruise on it tomorrow. It hurts a lot right now just sitting in my chair, actually. (One benefit is that this has convinced me that if and when I start jumping, I'm going to want to invest in some hip pads. [Or perhaps this?] Better to know now than later, I guess.) But one of the girls made the same mistake near the end of the session, so I didn't feel quite so dumb after that.

Anyway, I worked on crossovers and got them less terrible, especially going clockwise. CCW is still sad and stumbly. I don't know, I just don't seem to be able to lean over my left side as well as my right.

My T-stops are also more passable than the were on Saturday. I gave up on backwards stroking and just did alternating backwards swizzles. Picking up the foot will come later. I hope.
