I was half-expecting the same reveal you were, and I remember thinking that it was still possible to read it that way, and that there were probably people who did.

It's almost still plausible to me, except that Wim also saw the fairies, and I don't think he was humoring the narrator. Although maybe she made him up as much as she made everything else up.
