ROTK redux
Jan. 3rd, 2004 06:11 pmAnother perfect mid-spring day that got transposed into the middle of winter. Of course, I spent the whole afternoon inside.
fiara and I went to see ROTK (second time for both of us.)
- This movie still manages to impress the second time around. In every sense of the word, it's awesome. The views of Minas Tirith, the lighting of the beacons, the giant sweeping CGI shots of the armies all still had my jaw hanging. Pippin's song still sent chills running through my body. Whether you look at it from a story perspective, an eye candy one, or even an eye toward what it took to make this film, it's amazing.
- Legolas, I love you dearly, but you gotta work on that Prince of the Obvious thing. It was even more blindingly, uh, "obvious" this time.
- The helmets for the army of Gondor, and Aragorn's crown. *shakes head* The helmets for the Rohirrim were very cool, but Gondor's leave something to be desired. I know they have some sort of connection to the swans of Dol Amroth, but still. Yeesh. And the hats (not helmets, these things are hats) of the four guards of the white tree--dude. I don't care how ceremonial you are. There's no excuse for that.
- Seeing it a second time allowed me to see the detail put into this--the Celtic knotwork on the arm guards for the Rohirrim (Eowyn and Merry especially), the amazing stonework in Minas Tirith, even the stamping on the helmets of the Gondorian army. I never really noticed how much the Rohan decor depends on Celtic knots--I think there were even some knotwork horses somewhere. Very cool.
- The elf that tries to stop Arwen from going back to Rivendell, who has all of two lines? He's pretty. Maybe I'll take some of the attention off Legolas and start a fan following for him... ;)
The movie theatre we went to is in the largest mall in Nashville, so I stopped by Barnes & Noble afterward.
chiroho, I picked up A Game of Thrones. Gonna try and save a good bit of it for airplane reading, though, so I'm not gonna start it for a while, athough it does look good. I gotta finish The Silmarillion first, though, since it has to go back to the library. :)

I just took the dogs for a walk. It's still very warm, but quite silent, punctuated by huge gusts of wind. Y'know that "the stars are veiled, battle is coming" business Legolas spouts off? Totally that kind of weather here. It's gonna rain like crazy tonight.

Date: 2004-01-04 08:40 am (UTC)Yeah, I think I'll wait until the EE as well. I don't think it'll be quite the same as on the big screen (my TV is, uh...not that big ;)) but I don't think I can handle another four hours in a movie theatre for quite a long while.

Thanks. I read the first page in the bookstore, as well as the blurb on the back cover, and it all looked interesting.
