I'm reading Rousseau's Reveries of the Solitary Walker for Modern France. In the Sixth Walk, he says:
"If I had possessed the ring of Gyges [it made King Gyges invisible]...I have often wondered...how I should have used this ring, for in such a case power must indeed be closely followed by the temptation to abuse it."
Yeah, I know; I'm such a geek. But the One Ring was so the first thing I thought of when I read that passage...
