When spellcheck isn't enough
Mar. 17th, 2004 09:07 pmSo I was noodling around online and ran into this site about American/British English differences. It has more than your standard color/colour and zee/zed differences that you see on all these types of sites, including some I didn't know were correct across that ocean. (I wondered why spellcheck always yells at me for "judgement" even though it looks right! And why I could never spell "medieval/mediaeval" right as a child! ...Yeah, I read more BritLit as a kid than I did American stuff, I think. I can spell fine, except when the words are different outside of the US.) However, putting any kind of punctuation mark except for a semicolon or a colon outside of quotation marks will always give me the heebie-jeebies. That's one stylistic convention I definitely have never adopted.
But anyway, I had always thought most Stargate fic writers had some weird hangup about the term for Daniel's rocks. Lo and behold, "artefact," not "artifact," is the correct spelling outside of the US.
Oops.
Writing papers next year is going to be interesting...

Date: 2004-03-18 03:11 am (UTC)No, really. Very cool, very informative, very much appreciated. And I was dreading having to search around for stuff on Britspeak. Not that I was planning it. Oh, no. For I shall resist the pull of HP.
Goddamn you enablers.

Date: 2004-03-18 03:25 am (UTC)If you want more Britspeak, I highly recommend these sites:
British/American Dictionary (it's huge and searchable, plus there are pages for differences in grammar and usage)
and
The American's Guide to Speaking British (highly entertaining)
Enabler? Me? Noooooooo...

You know, if it exists. ;)
But, heh. I'm good at resisting. Just watch me.

We had a fairly involved discussion about this at the last ScaperCon. We decided that since we were all going to hell, hell would thus be populated by Scapers and be far more fun than anywhere else. ;)

Riiiiiiiiight...I do believe I still remember you writing that Farscape fic after a few months of persuasion... *eg*

Yes, really bad fic. ;) Besides, if I were to write anything it would be slashy Percy/Oliver fic and you don't wanna see that...

Hey, it's not supposed to be funny! It's sad and sweet and yearning and there's some out there, you know. And it would be pretty close to original fiction, to boot. Fun stuff.

And yet the mere thought of Oliver and Percy makes me laugh, still... (Then again, a lot of things about HP make me laugh. Heh.)
