Finally went to see Prisoner of Azkaban today. My mom, me, and another random lady were the only people in the theatre. I heart matinees in theatres no one goes to when the movie's been out for a month.
Y'know, I think I like these movies so much because I have absolutely no recollection of the books. All I remembered of PoA the book before seeing the movie was that Sirius was introduced and than when I read it (junior or senior year of high school) I coveted Hermione's time-turner like a covety covetous thing. I was willing to do horrible deeds to get my hands on one of those things, even if just for the last grading period of the year. Oh, AP courses, the things you did to me.
Anyway. This movie? So much less bloated and much more zippy than the first two. It was like Safari or Mozilla versus Internet Explorer. I have somehow developed a deep, abiding love for Snape, who is so deliciously evil but without seeming so...sour this time around. Maybe it was the interaction with Lupin. Oh, and Sirius and Remus? New favorite characters. Oh, they make me so happy. I was doing the slash dance in my seat. Don't remember noticing it in the books (then again, what I remember about the books could fit on the tip of my nose), but it was most amusing here. Oh, and Remus with the jazz on the gramaphone was hilarious. To be honest, I'm getting intrigued by the MWPP-era characters, and seeing/remembering the backstory there was almost more interesting than the main plot with HHR. Speaking of whom, Hermione didn't strike me quite right in this movie...she wasn't as geeky as I've always pictured her/as she was portrayed in the first movie, and she was sort of more...I dunno...girly. Although I loved her line about how her hair looks from the back, and I can totally see geeky-but-insecure Hermione saying it.
Loved Michael Gambon's Dumbledore. He's more like I pictured him in the books--almost hippie-like, fun-loving, but still authoritative. I was hoping for more of McGonagall, though, since she's my favorite character. Well, y'know, sharing space with Sirius and Remus now, but yeah. I am so turning into that woman one day.
And now, the real star of the show--the scenery! The sets! Mmmmm. There is a nascent set designer or propsmaster lurking in my soul, I think. I was all over the castle again, of course, and oh, the mountains...was this filmed in Scotland? The mountains and lakes looked like all the pictures I've ever seen of Loch Ness and the like.
spockette? (Ooooh, I'm gonna be there this year! Eeeeee!)
