icepixie: (look up)

I swear, songs from The Little Mermaid were running through my head all through this ep.

So that was Atlantis. I watched it with my mother, so I didn't jot down little notes to comment on later like I usually do, so this will be disjointed.

- Torri Higginson did so much better at playing Weir than she did in New Order. Much more believable. I dunno if it was the juxtaposition of her against the SG-1 folks who've been playing their characters for years which made her look bad by comparison of what, but she seems to have improved. I can't recall any moments where I really thought she was acting too hard. Also, her accent calmed way down. Well, there was a weird thing in the last scene where she sounded way more British-ish than usual, but other than that it was much better. She was especially fabulous in the scene where she was yelling at Shepperd for wanting to go to the Wraith homeworld. Speaking of which...

- Um, UST anyone? I have no doubt that there will be shipperfic for these two at some point soon. I feel it in my bones. (And it's entirely possible it'll be my shipperfic, since I'm usually the dork who sees one ep of something and writes three fics... *coughFarscapecough*) Yeah, so TPTB are trying to set up Shepperd/Teyla in a way-too-obvious way (note the dramatic swell of romantic music when they were talking about the tea, the necklace, etc.), but the prickly UST is so much better. ;)

- Teyla herself sort of bugged me a little. I think it was her contraction-less way of speaking which no one else used. Irksome, slightly. Also, was amused that everyone spoke English. I know, I know, the quasi-official explanation is that going through the Stargate confers Universal Translator-type abilities on people, but still.

- Shepperd is sort of like Jack II. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, as Shepperd's brand of sarcasm was somewhat more understated, and he doesn't seem to have as many rough edges as Jack does, but... I hope they don't make him a stand-in for Jack's character. I can see the potential. BTW, does he have to be called John? Really? Can't TV get some different male character names? 'Cause now he's gonna mix in my head with John Crichton, John Danziger, John Grant, and all the other Johns I'm forgetting, and I'm gonna write weird unintentional crossover fic.

- Beckett may very well be my new favorite character. Hee! He cracked me up! He sounds a whole, whole lot like Billy Boyd! *giggles* "I'm in another galaxy. How much further out can I get?"

- I sort of wish that actors didn't get reused for different characters within the same universe. My first thought upon seeing Garwin Sanford was of Narim, of course, and I don't think I can make the jump from Narim to this Simon fellow. Same with Robert Patrick and Doggett Col. Sumner, although that's not quite the same as Narim/Simon. (Please tell me one of the SG-1 folks eventually meets this guy and comments on his resemblance to a certain Tollan...)

- I want to worship the set and CGI people. The city of Atlantis is amazing. I think I'm looking forward to seeing more of it more than the characters are. The city rising out of the sea was really impressive. And I loveloveloved the visuals of the Gate in orbit around the Wraith homeworld. AWESOME.

- I found it amusing that the music during most of the scenes set in Atlantis sounded exactly like the background music played in Ripley's Aquarium. *snicker* Oh, and the bottom of the Wraith ships, with those two black holes where, presumably, the transporter beam comes out of? They look exactly like the bottom side of one of those fish with the huge snout that looks like a chainsaw. Seriously, almost an exact match. Hee.

- The red-haired wraith? Is Marilyn Manson and M'Lee's love child who's taken a position as a dementor at Azkaban. "I'm huuuuuungry...." [/Farscape geeky moment]

- Okay, who else cracked up at McKay's "Does this chicken have lemon in it?" at the end of the ep? BWAH!

I think I'm really going to like this show. *bounce*

All my sister could think of was that she looked a lot like Daryl Hannah.
