Happy belated birthday, [livejournal.com profile] alorarose! Slap me with a trout for forgetting. Hope you had a good one.

It feels so strange to have ignored the entire Back To School thing this year. Metro starts on Monday (somewhat later than recent years; they must be starting winter break way late this year), so all the displays and stuff will probably be gone by Wendesday. And I don't even leave the country until the end of next month, much less start classes. (They start in October. October! Four days into it!) And I'm not buying school supplies until I get over there, 'cause I'd rather bring clothes than notebooks.

I feel more adult than usual. Or something. Yeah.

Also, it's odd to see people running around getting ready for school to start when it's so cold out. Today was nice...felt great if you were in the sun or moving around, but could get downright chilly if you weren't. (Yes, the high was about 80F. Shut up.) But the first few weeks of school have to be conducted in the hottest heat you ever did feel. It's, like, a law. There was all too much walking around downtown in blazing heat to get to and from the bus station during my four years of high school; these young'uns should suffer, too! ;)

Charles de Lint's The Little Country is one of those annoying books that have two storylines, one of which is really interesting, the other of which is deadly dull. I'd love to skip over all the dull sections, but I have a sinking feeling that it'll be important for the other storyline at some point. Sigh. So I'm slogging through...

The Atlantis Crackfic That Ate My Brain has become the Atlantis Crackfic That Ate My Brain And Won't Frelling End. Still stuck on page five 'cause I can't figure out a way to end it without it turning into some kind of monster plotfic, which is just...you don't want this to be a plotfic. It just wouldn't fly. So I'm trying to end it gracefully, but it's not working. Grrrrr.

And Muse is still bugging me to write John/Lizzie kidfic where McKay babysits. Not to mention all this original fic I've been toying with in my head, but can't get enough of a handle on to put down on paper (or keyboard, as it were). Speaking of which, I'm so behind on sheppard_n_weir digests. One day, I'm gonna catch up with that list. I've been reading here and there, but not replying. Gah. What is it with me and complete lack of willpower in the summer?

Besides, England has the way-cool A4 paper size, anyway. And spiffy binders that only have two holes right in the middle, instead of three evenly-spaced ones. So the stuff you brought wouldn't necessarily be compatible with any class handouts/whatever anyway. And yes, I'm coveting your future English school supplies.

I'd read hokey.

Well, to put paper in the binders, you have to punch two holes near the middle (yes, I have a small two-hole paper punch). So the binders have two... prong-y things in the middle. Whatever they're called.

Freehanding a hole punch is something I could screw up so badly.

Oh, you can buy a two-hole punch just like the three-hole ones here. The first time I was there, I just did normal folders and such. But the next time, we got lots of packets instead of just small handouts or books. Too annoying to deal with, especially the big ones, so I bought the binder stuff.

I'd say wait 'til you get there, see what kind of handouts you're getting, then head out and stock up. Might want to check with Corde to see what she did (and other general advice, too - I was in London and Edinburgh, and I don't know how Exeter compares).

Yay, English school supplies. A4 paper is the best.

And Muse is still bugging me to write John/Lizzie kidfic where McKay babysits.

Oooooh, please? I'd offer you...um, something really yummy?

Actually, I'd like to see S/W pregnacy/baby fic because it'd be interesting to see one where the woman is in charge with regards to work, not an equal or a subordinate of the man. (And that type of fic, if well done, is my guilty pleasure 'cause I'm a dork.

It's longer and narrower, yes? Sounds good, I guess. I don't really care as long as it's not wide-ruled... (Wide-ruled is evil. Especially for small handwriting-types like me. I end up having room to put two lines of text on each ruled line...)

Yep, 8.27 X 11.69 in (210 X 297 mm). I think the lines for ruled paper might be slightly more wider than college ruled, but nothing like the evil wide rule. Ugh, a pox on wide rule.

Hmmm...I was toying with this idea in my brain...

Yay!

Really? I tend to mentally separate characters' working and personal relationships, so they always tend to be equal in the personal arena, whcih is where the babyfic would take place.

To me, it's not so much their relationship, but their relationships with everyone else. I imagine most people would want to protect a pregnant woman and to have her be the boss would be interesting to me.

I'm afraid fics that cover other people dealing with a relationship (especially Other POVs, again done well, not Mary Sues) are another guilty pleasure of mine. Voyeuristic, I know.

I didn't really think it'd be something you'd write; it just popped into my head and you know my filter. ;)

I also can't read or write babyfic unless it's humor. Can't do it. Baby or pregnancy fic that isn't at least 75% funny makes me run screaming for the hills. It's the same instnict that makes me hate kid-centered episodes of TV shows...and what made me so freaking glad that the Athosian kids are out of the picture, at least for now...

I don't tend to like the stuff on tv, since I get kind of bored after awhile (and so do the writers, oftentimes), but it's kinda fun in fic for me.

I think I'm just fascinated by pregnancy and babies in fic. There's so much change there. (Plus sometimes I get in a hugely mushy mood. :P)

Of course, when they have generally adjusted, it's not so fun anymore, which is almost evil. On a show, you'd have to keep going with it, not just the one shots of fic.

Anyway, it's a weird personal preference. Ignore it. Go with the funny. Write!

Also, I am glad those kids are gone. They can show up for humour and the like sporadically, but otherwise? No, not on the show, please.

Quantifying...

Pregnancy/babyfic spews a lot of crap. Very, very small signal to noise ratio. Most of it makes me want to bury it far, far away, but if done well, I love it. Because I am a weirdo. And I will so shut up now.

For other fic...
