icepixie: ([Skating] Roca Sur ghost in pink)
My package of skating goodies arrived!

...Half of it doesn't fit.

Apparently "one size fits all" gel knee pads are not, in fact, fit for me and my thighs like tree trunks. These things would make excellent shin guards, were I in need of such things, but unfortunately I am not. I'm going to trek out to a sporting goods store and see if they can outfit me with something better. As a last resort, I can get gel pads and sew them into an old pair of tights. Not that those are comfortable either, but at least I never felt like they were cutting off my circulation.

The wrist guards were a little better, but still kind of small. Also, I didn't realize exactly how much motion they would restrict. Bah.

However, my purple soakers fit over my blades perfectly, and after some chopping, so do my hard guards. (Yes, they're purple too. And yes, of course they were made in Canada. By the way, the manufacturer's main site is not to be missed.) I knew the guards had to be put together, but I didn't realize quite how...labor intensive the process would be. Or how many tools it would require. (Lucky for me, Dad stepped in with his rubber mallet to help out.)

Finally, I got myself some Sno Seal, since I've never seen it for sale down here. I've read conflicting stories about whether you can apply it to new skates, as some of the boot-and-blade sets like mine are coated in polyurethane that you have to wait to wear off before the wax will penetrate the leather, but it can't hurt to try. If they're sealed already, I'll have it ready for when the polyurethane wears off.

In other news, I broke 30,000 words on the not!drawerfic! And I have a four-day weekend in which to write more! I have the next three scenes blocked out in my head and some of the dialogue written, so I'm crossing my fingers I can knock them out by Sunday.
