Finally got an internet connection in my room (hooray!), but it won't let me send e-mail (except through various webmails), access my webserver through an FTP program or use iJournal. Um...eh? I guess they've blocked all uploading, then?

*bangs head against wall*

Eeep. I have a similar problem, but not nearly to the degree you do on the St. A's computers - I can't use any kind of P2P program whatsoever, which sucks, oh yes. I am DYING without my music collection...

Also, what's your phone number? You know my room phone number, yeah? 01334 424032. As soon as I can work out how to make outgoing calls from my phone, I'm totally calling you. And then we can say the exact same stuff at the exact same time, but be utterly incapable of understanding each other's accents. Heh.

yeah, I hear you on not being able to upload and things just generally being difficult. I can't upload any of my photos, and therefore no one can see where I live. Or any of my amazing pictures of Edinburgh. Rarr. I also can't expand my music collection which is damn small since I got my laptop only a few days before leaving the States and didn't think to put music on until the night before I left.
Hope you're adjusting well and enjoying England.

I have no problem with them cutting off P2P sharing; I mean, Kenster-type stuff is illegal, and takes up a lot of bandwith when outside the LAN. But I want to upload pictures to my website. There's nothing illegal about that, and hell, I'll sign an agreement that says I'll only upload two very small ones per day or something if they're that desperate to conserve bandwidth.

Well, I was expecting no P2P; I don't use it at home anyway, and Kenyon blocks it as well except on the LAN. So we can share amongst ourselves, just not with the outside world. But this whole no-information-can-leave-your-computer-except-in-a-web-browser thing they have is absolutely ridiculous. If absolutely nothing else, I want to upload files to my webserver! I'm having a hard time seeing why I should pay ITS £60 to have this kind of limited internet access.

You had to pay £60 for your net access? Oh, that sucks! Mine cost £2.50 for the network cable, and the rest of it was free, so I can't really complain - I'll just make people send me music/stargate/atlantis over AIM. Heh. If you're using an ftp client, have you tried going to (provided you're still with hostonce) ftp.ice-and-stars.com/htdocs and just copying and pasting? If that doesn't work (which is what you're probably doing already, but never mind), go yell at ITS.

Yes, £60, which is about $120, which is really annoying when they block all FTP connections. ALL OF THEM. Argh. Do you know of any way to upload files to a server on HostOnce without using an FTP program? I hear that Exeter will let you use an ssh/scp connection (essentially a secure FTP connection; something like the old Telnet), but I don't think HostOnce supports that. Sigh.

Brilliant. =) Do you have a land line number? Would probably be a bit cheaper to call from/to that.

And also, what mobile phone network are you with? If it's 02, I may be able to call you for insanely cheap rates...
