Really, I ought to stay away from Wikipedia and OG and
dwcanon_fodder and places like that where they discuss Old Skool Who Canon.
Let me recreate my general thought process from occasional bits of the past few weeks for you:
Regeneration, got that months ago...Ace looks like she was a fun companion, blowing stuff up all the time...Gallifrey = full of boring old farts, okay...is that celery pinned to Five's lapel?...Sixth Doc bears an astonishing resemblance to Dominic Mognahan-as-Merry-in-LOTR; it must be the curly blond hair...the Doctor waswoven born from a genetic loom...Romana was a--
*backs up*
...Loom?
That's either one of the coolest things ever or really, really disturbing. Jury's still out on which. (And yes, I know it's book!canon and not TV!canon and therefore is considered inferior.)
*
Speaking of time travel, the temporal logic I'm trying to keep straight in my story for Fiction is starting to get the better of me. Gah. I think I might need to excise a section, which is irksome, particularly as I can't decide which of the conflicting sections I like better. *pouts*

Date: 2006-03-20 12:50 am (UTC)Yup, Ace *rocks*. My favorite companion ever. (And her Doctor, the 7th, is still my favorite Doc...they're like two of my best friends. *g*)
That is indeed celery. It was a thing. Eventually sort of explained. Sort of.
Can't comment on Merry!Six, but I'm amused.
And yeah, the Loom thing? I'm not a fan. The books took the series in some directions that really didn't work for me, for various reasons. And the Loom thing seemed to be based around the idea that "OMG, the Doctor MUST be asexual, Time Lords can't be interested in hanky panky!"...the same stories that dealt heavily with the Looms tried to explain away the Doctor's granddaughter as adopted. I'm very much in the other part of the fandom...I believe the Doctor had a wife at one time, and a child, leading logically to that granddaughter. (I've got a whole saga in my head about the Doctor's tragic past...) I not only love the Doctor/Rose ship, I was even a fan of the often-maligned Doctor/Grace ship in the 8th Doctor movie...
So yeah.
Bottom line with Who-dom...and with any canon, really, I'd say...take the bits you enjoy, ignore everything else, and have fun with the ride!
Also, if a second opinion would help your temporal conundrum, I love that sort of thing, so I'd be happy to help. :?)

Date: 2006-03-20 03:20 am (UTC)It seems that Seven is one you either love or hate. Ace is just cool, though, from what I can tell. And insofar as I have a "my Doctor," my feet are firmly planted in the Ten camp. *g*

Uh-huh. Drink a lot of Bloody Marys, did he?

They're not dead ringers for each other, but there's something in the basic facial structure and definitely in the hair that's quite similar. It's like how
I actually think the idea of children being woven on genetic looms is quite a cool one for a sci-fi universe, perhaps as a metaphor for artificial genetic selection. Not a fan of how it fits into the whole "the Doctor must be asexual!!111!!eleventy!!!" deal, though, as you say. After 900 years, I'd imagine the Doctor could give multisexual Jack a run for his money. *g*

Pretty much. I'm certainly not going to get bogged down in Old School canon, 'cause whoa. Ow.

That? Would be fantastic. I'll definitely be e-mailing you within the next day. :)

Date: 2006-03-20 05:38 am (UTC)And Ten and Nine are definitely high on my list too, btw!
The celery thing...in Five's last story he explains that he's allergic to certain gases, and celery turns colors in the presence of those gases.
And...mmm...yeah, I can sooooooort of see the Merry!Six thing...
Who Canon...outside of fandom debates, you never really need to worry about it too much. Just about every Who story stands alone. But the more you see, the more you can make connections...and that's just fun!
And I look forward to the email. :?)
