More Who stuff
Apr. 7th, 2006 10:27 pmI thought it would be better than last week. It wasn't.
I was looking forward to at least the whole "I could save the world but lose you" bit, but the effect was ruined because the Earth was under dubious threat from FARTING ALIENS. And just before, Rose and Harriet had DISCUSSED THE EXACT SMELL OF THE FARTS. IN DETAIL.
How can the man responsible for "Bad Wolf," which is one my three favorite episodes of the season, have written this? *sigh*
(Also, is it Britspeak to say you'll vote for your prime minister? 'Cause they kind of aren't elected by the people, if I understand my British parliamentary structure correctly.)
I was actually kind of glad to see that it was ten o'clock. That's REALLY SAD. (If it had just been helium, I think I could've handled it better, as I could at least have rationalized it as an homage to Farscape...)

Seriously. I liked some of the stuff with Rose and Jackie and even Mickey, at the very end, but everything else...gah. No.

Date: 2006-04-08 05:17 am (UTC)Just finished rewatching this, and...I have to say, I really love it.
Yes, the farting aliens are a bit silly, but they look rather cool, and I love the historical reference that is part of their downfall (Hannibal), which totally justifies the fart-smell description IMHO. :?P
I looooooooooove Harriet Jones here--and it's fascinating to contrast her setup here with what happens in CI. She's supposed to serve 3 consecutive terms and build Britain's Golden Age, hmmm? So did Ten just shake things up for her--or is he rewriting history? Does his daring go that far?
As obvious as it may have been, I still liked the parallel with current events.
I loved that it was Mickey the Idiot who saved the world.
I loved even more his scene with the Doc at the end.
My heart breaks a bit for Rose's mum, and all the stuff with her and Rose is so well done, especially the end.
I love how the Doctor's a bit of a jerk...or a child...or perhaps just haunted by the family of his own he's lost...running away with Rose again rather than facing a dinner. And again, you have the wonderful contrast to his next self.
I love the further development of the same things I loved in Rose--that the Doctor's life IS dangerous as well as glorious, but you have to accept both. Life isn't safe, especially if you really want to LIVE it.
Okies, that's enough babbling out of me, but...yeah, I love it. I love my show so much!

Date: 2006-04-09 12:39 am (UTC)NOTHING justifies that conversation. NOTHING. *shudder*
Harriet is quite nifty ("pass to the left," ha!), and if it were possible for this two-parter to be salvaged, she would be one of the main reasons.
As obvious as it may have been, I still liked the parallel with current events.
*shrug* I like my political commentary a bit more subtle. This didn't do much for me.
I loved that it was Mickey the Idiot who saved the world.
By hacking into one little website--with an ordinary, non-souped up computer, and ONE PASSWORD--which can apparently control the nuclear power of a substantial nation. And apparently through Flash, since wouldn't he need a special program to run that whole radar thing? Good lord. And again: PASSCODES, OMG.
I loved even more his scene with the Doc at the end.
That one was rather nice. Not redeeming, but nice. I sort of tolerate him better now, I suppose. Still wish we never had to see him again.
I did enjoy the Doctor's manipulative basatardyness at the end. That was a nice kick after the relentless camp of the preceding 45 minutes. Jackie was not entirely hateful, either.
I love the further development of the same things I loved in Rose
This might be a key difference. Rose is, after these two (and subject to change upon seeing "The Long Game"), my least favorite episode of the season. I give it a free pass because it's a pilot and therefore has to make some plot concessions in order to fit in the necessary exposition that all pilots do, but it's definitely not one I'll watch over again.

Date: 2006-04-10 04:27 am (UTC)Then again, I would say the commentary is rather more subtle and layered in The Christmas Invasion...in some ways, it's almost like AoL/WW3 was a dress rehearsal for CI.
Re: Mickey saves the world...yeah, I can't argue it was unbelievably simplistic. But in the world of this show, I can just marginally believe it...enough to go with it and enjoy the goofy ride, anyway. "Imagination is more important than knowledge" and all that. ;?P And I can actually explain it away quite simply: the Doctor probably built that website/passcode system himself after one of his adventures with UNIT, for emergencies. The password being "buffalo" could even be a wink in that direction. (And the Doctor could totally do that in such a way no one would notice, or ever be able to find it and use it without him. :?P)
Mickey generally: I'm actually looking forward to seeing where he goes, literally and figuratively, this season. Seeing if he can grow...and I believe he can. But I believe most anyone can. :?P
Rose: Yeah, doesn't hold up with the best episodes of the season...but certain scenes are as good as anything ever done. The "I can feel the Earth turning" scene, and the "eat your chips...or come with me" scene at the end. They just feel like ME, they jive so perfectly with how I see life.
And I'll watch all the episodes, over and over...I just get a simple childlike joy, from every Who episode I've ever seen. :?)
Ok, so I'm a geek. :?P

Date: 2006-04-09 12:21 am (UTC)There was stuff to like about these eps, but the farting aliens and the utter lack of even the most fundamental logic in the plot overpowered what I did like. (The UK gave their nuclear codes to the UN? Whaaaaa?)
