Um.

The hell? I've seen this plot before. Seriously. This was like...Stargate-by-numbers, or something. The whole thing was like a warmed-over version of either earlier SG eps or eps of other series. Sure, interesting concept--except for the fact that it's been done to death. I don't have a problem with plot-driven eps as opposed to character-driven ones, but only when the plot doesn't reveal the conclusion in the first act. I'm thinking back to episodes like S5's' "Failsafe," which I thought was a very, very clever way of dealing with the ol' "asteroid's about to hit Earth" deal...I thought I knew what was going to happen, but when it happened--and didn't work--about halfway through the episode, it was new and different after that. Plus they added arc information. And there was the snark, which was oddly absent from this ep (as a consequence of RDA not being around so much this season?). This was just sort of a "Carter does her thing, Daniel does his thing, they save the world, everyone goes home happy" hour of blehness.

I don't even have any little bits to comment on, 'cause there just weren't any. No bright moments that made me say, "hey, that's cool/neat/funny/interesting." I was saying lines before the actors said them. The writers were telegraphing plot developments. Ugh.

Well, okay, one bright spot. Whoever was playing Pallin (sp? the guy who worked with Carter) was kind of attractive, in a Liam Neeson-clone kind of way. The town was also very pretty. I wouldn't mind living there.

If I were in the habit of giving grades to episodes, I'd give this a C-. Despite the lack of decent source material (i.e., the script), it was executed competently. The actors seemed like they actually cared, mostly. The set designers did a lovely job. Some interesting camera angles and pans. Just nothing behind it.

Maybe if they'd found out halfway through that there was nothing to be done to save these people form the shrinking forcefield and spent the rest of the ep dealing with that, it would've been better. That's my on-the-fly recommendation. (Grrr...shoulda had me beta the script, dammit! ;))

Anyway...here's hoping the rest of the season gets better. So far we have one excellent episode ("Orpheus"), one pretty good episode ("Fragile Balance"), and three "meh" episodes ("Fallen," "Homecoming," this one). Hmmm.
