He's just so damn cute. And I seem to recall him having that look fairly frequently. If I had to take a random guess, I'd pick something like Earthshock, but I could be wildly wrong :)

Still haven't watched PoM. Bah. Maybe tomorrow. Hornblower's calling my name, too, and since I don't own that one, I suppose it gets priority!

Ooh, do post some Hanging Gale thoughts outside of a spoiler cut, if you can. As for HH, just be warned that there are four before PM shows up, and the first one is not especially gripping. They do improve dramatically after that one, though!

I'm sure I can come up with something suitably vague before descending into spoiler-land. And a State of the Hair report too, of course. ;)

HH...hmmm. D'you think I could get away with coming in where he shows up? I think I tried reading one of the HH novels a couple years ago and gave it up as rather boring. Which I found very strange, as two modern SF series that I love to absolute bits--Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan saga, and David Drake's Daniel Leary/Adele Mundy books--and one I like rather well (David Weber's Honor Harrington series) are consistently described as "Hornblower in space." Huh.

a State of the Hair report

Oh god. ::cringes:: Y'all know me too well (yes, I know that's entirely my fault, but the fact remains!!).

HH...hmmm. D'you think I could get away with coming in where he shows up?

Hmm...I suppose, but you'd be missing a fair amount of backstory. The first one is the only one that I found really meh. The remaining three were quite good--each one a bit better than the one before it. I'm not sure why the first one just left me going "Well, okay, but not great." I wonder if you could just skip the first one and see what happens? You'd still be missing a bit, but how he gets on the ship and his conflict with a shipmate aren't nearly as interesting as what comes after. You'd be missing out on a lot of Captain Pellew, who is awesome, if you skipped all four.

That said, one of my friends is only in it for Robert Lindsay and therefore refers to it as the Captain Pellew show, and another one and I decided last night that we'd be totally okay if HH disappeared and it was just called Pellew, Bush, and Kennedy ;)

Heh. It's not like I'm not just the same. (I sniffled a little bit last week when I found out his hair in the DW movie was a wig.)

I've found that backstory can easily be looked up on the internet. ;) Watching things in order is good, but it doesn't bother me overmuch if I get something out of order.

I'd ask if you're absolutely certain about that, but ya know what? I don't want to know (so do not tell me!). La la la... At least I'm not alone, though!!

I'm not surprised that you can find the backstory online. I think you might like 2-4, though. You could give it a try and see, in any case. If you don't like the second one, you could skip ahead. 5 and 6 are two halves of the same story, though, so you'll want to do those in order ;)

Well, yes, that does tend to be a good thing, if it's a two-parter. ;)
