Double Drabble

icepixieDecided that I'd never figure out the story behind this little bit I found on my hard drive. A little tweaking turned it into an honest-to-god, exactly-200-words double drabble that is probably the shortest thing I will ever write. (I'm far too long-winded to ever write a real, 100-word drabble. The recent history paper that only had to be fifteen pages but ended up being twenty-three comes to mind...)

"Every Step"

He sat on a bed in the infirmary while she stood beside him. She was talking to him, something about how they'd be back on the mission rotation in no time...
"Sam," he said, the sound pausing her flow of words. She gave him a puzzled look, both for the interruption and the use of her given name. "I can't return to active duty. My knee was screwed up too bad this time."
Silence. Sam opened her mouth again to try and fill the space, but was stopped by the tips of Jack's fingers against her lips. She fought down the thrill of electricity that the contact sent through her body.
"I'm not sure what I'm gonna do yet. Hammond told me that we'll...'discuss my options.'" He removed his fingers from her lips, caressing her chin as he passed it, and then took her hand in his. His tone became hushed, husky with emotion. "But I know whatever I end up doing, I want you there with me, Sam."
Sam felt tears begin to prick at her eyes. She fought them back with a smile that threatened to crack her face in two. "Every step of the way...Jack."

I may be doing more of this in the coming week--I'm going through my HD and figuring out what I'm never going to finish that could be turned into shorter stuff with a little effort. We'll see what happens...

Yup, it is. I feel the need for MSR fic now... (Been years since I read some of that stuff. CC's "beams of starlight" crap, and everything that came after it, totally put me off everything about the show.)
