This one is indirectly indebted to my roommate last year, Julianne, and a conversation that we had a few months ago. Not wild about the title. If anyone can think of a better one, I'd love to hear it.

"A Most Dangerous Temptation"

She'd been working too hard again. He'd found her holed up in her lab, tinkering with something one of the other SG teams had brought back. When he'd asked her how long she'd been at it, the guilty expression that crossed her face was all the evidence and impetus that he needed. After a brief moment for both of them to change, he'd dragged her out of the mountain and out to dinner.
Once they were pleasantly full from a solid meal of steak and potatoes (*much* better than the commissary sandwiches she'd been living on for the past several days), he'd insisted on paying and walked her out the door. Before they reached his truck, he stopped, almost hesitant. "You wanna take a walk?" He indicated the wooded area--it eventually turned into a park--that the restaurant backed up to.
Sam cocked her head. It was warm out, but a pleasant breeze kept it from being too hot. She wouldn't mind being outside her lab for a little bit longer. "Sure." They switched direction and began walking towards the trees.
It was early summer, and the day was long. The sun was only just beginning to set, despite the fact that it was almost eight o'clock. A rising full moon promised light once the sun had gone. They walked comfortably together, in the close-but-not-touching manner they had perfected over the years. Soon, they had disappeared from view among the trees.
Sam wondered what had prompted this invitation. It wasn't like they didn't get trees aplenty off-world, so it wasn't because he liked the woods. And if he'd wanted to talk to her about something, he certainly wasn't giving any indication.
Still, it was nice just to walk beside him in silence, without anyone else around. It felt nice to stretch her legs after sitting in front of her computer for most of the week. And if it felt nicer when she could see, hear, and feel him bare inches away, walking in step with her--well, that wasn't something anybody else needed to know.
Eventually, they came to a small clearing among the pines and other trees. They were standing on the edge of a ridge, from which they could see the outskirts of Colorado Springs, the lights of which were beginning to appear in the falling darkness. Jack looked at her, asking if she wanted to stop. Sam nodded her agreement, and they sat next to each other in the long grass.
Jack watched his companion surreptitiously as she stared up at the sky, taking note of how the moonlight gleamed on her hair and sparkled in her eyes. The shadows created by the light falling on the planes of her face and body were enticing, and he wanted nothing more than to use his hands to discover what waited in the dark.
Instead, he covered her hand with his own, slipping his fingers through the grass and under hers until he grasped them tightly. She shot him a look, but he didn't let go, and she finally turned her hand to clasp his in return. They resumed their individual contemplations of the now fully-night sky and the civilization below, drifting ever-so-slowly closer together now that the initial barrier had been broken with the contact of their hands.
Maybe there was something to all the old wives' tales about madness coming with the full moon, Jack thought. He wanted to give in to the recklessness within him, when he'd always been so careful not to every time he was with her. God, she was so close. It would be the work of a moment to eliminate the remaining distance between them and touch his lips to hers...
With a start, he realized that both he and Sam had moved, and they were close enough for him to feel her breath on his cheek. He stilled, and saw Sam's blue eyes widen a fraction before she wrenched herself away and leaned back.
"We can't do this," she said, her voice full of the regrets she would not say.
He couldn't speak above a whisper. "Who would know?" Hidden as they were by trees, out from under the pressure of the mountain, no one was there to see a regulation-breaking kiss.
"We would."
He knew she was right. They would know, and that would make all the difference. It couldn't stop with one kiss, one night, one anything. They would both know what was possible, and sooner or later, they would try to have it again. Sooner or later, it would all come crashing down around their ears.
"Right." He choked the word out, unable to say anything more, taking a piece of grass between his fingers and twisting it as if his life depended on it. Sometimes he wished they both didn't have so damned much integrity.
A deep silence fell over them as Jack demolished the piece of grass. Eventually, Sam said, "We should go."
"Yeah." He stood up and wiped the dirt from his jeans as she did the same. Under the cover of night, they returned the way they had come, close, but not touching.
The journey back to the parking lot was also made in silence, but not for lack of anything to say. They had also perfected the art of saying everything by the mere fact that they said nothing at all.
He dropped her off beside her car back at the base. "See you tomorrow," he said.
She gave him a small smile. "Yeah. You will."
