Sigh. I again seem to have had a communication problem with the person who cut my hair. I don't think my three inches is equivalent to everyone else's three inches. Or possibly they don't realize that my hair is really quite curly and thus is about two inches longer when it's wet than when it's dry. This is even shorter than that debacle in November, which, coincidentally, was the last time I had my hair cut. It accentuates everything I hate about my face and neck, thus making me look like Professor Umbridge as a teenager. (Yes, and it takes away the years added by the new glasses frames, so I'm back to looking twelve. Grrr, I look like a freaking baby doll.)

Gah! Note to self: improve communication with hair-cutters. Or alternately, learn to cut hair.

This is going to come out of the blue, and I realize that, and if I got a comment like this on my journal I would probably freak out.

HOWEVER: I was just looking at people on Livejournal with "Kenyon College" as an interest, and I stumbled upon you. It was a little creepy -- in the good way! -- because

A) I'll be attending Kenyon in the fall,
B) I'm planning on majoring in English, and possibly having a Creative Writing concentration,
C) I'm hoping to try the Exeter program in my junior year, and
D) I'm in fandom as well. Maybe this doesn't seem as amazing to you as it does to me, but I don't know many people in fandom unless I've met them, well, through fandom.

D'you mind if I friend you? I understand if you're not comfortable with it; as I said, I would be leery of a random stranger popping up on my journal like this.

Well, hello there! You are more than welcome to friend me; I'm definitely friending you. :) It's always good to keep up with other fandom types at Kenyon. Those of us get into enough to, say, write fanfic and the like are rather few and far between, although there's a decent enough number of people who dabble their toes in the general geekitude that is online fandom. And hey, most of them are English majors, too. ;)

I don't know Collins as well as I should (something I mean to remedy, and soon, especially after the poems you posted), but I definitely know the feeling. I've made my fair share of poetry-love posts, too.

Hee! I think English majors by nature have an easier time getting obsessive about a fandom, and Kenyon is certainly crawling with us. It helps that, because we can't get cable in our rooms, you have to congregate in the lounges in order to watch SF TV, and of course you naturally run into likeminded folks. (Speaking of which, I see you have Stargate listed as an interest...I need to introduce you to my roommmate from last year, who's actually going to be on campus this year. Upperclass Wellness, where I lived last year, was composed entirely of geeks, and we had great fun in the lounge on Stargate nights. :))

It seems like every year or two I discover another poet who just pushes all the right buttons for me. Last time it was Edna St. Vincent Millay, but Collins hit me even harder. Maybe it's that I like free verse more, I dunno.

Oh, good. That's something I've been worried about -- how to be fannish when I have limited TV access and the like. :) I haven't been watching Stargate as much recently, because it seems to have gone downhill somewhat, but if it's something that gets watched on my hall, I'll probably get back into it.

Yeah, that worried me a bit as well before I got to school, but the great thing about college (or Kenyon, anyway) is that nobody except the truly dedicated watch TV. There's none of this sitting in front of the TV when you have nothing to do; it's only on when someone is a fan of a series and makes a weekly committment to it, at least in my experience. Popular shows like The West Wing or Friends or whatever usually have several people watching them in a lot of lounges, but most of the time they're completely empty. Also, you can reserve lounge TVs by taking to your RA, which is exceptionally useful, and if for some reason your lounge is already reserved, you can usually find one somewhere that isn't being used.

Pssst, Upperclass Wellness, fourth floor Mather. Best lounge ever, as few people know about it, and anyone who lives there is automatically inclined to be geeky. Make friends with the people living there. Specifically the people in 410 (who just happen to be my former roommate and rowdycamels's former roommate, and who happen to both be major geeks ;)). Or, y'know, just crash the lounge...I guarantee it will be tuned to Stargate on Friday nights.

I've made a note of it. (No, really -- I have.) Thanks for the advice. I'm on Gund now, which I'm pretty happy about because of the dividers(!!!), but I don't know where the Gund geeks are. :)

You're welcome. rowdycamels was in Gund for our freshman year. I was in Lewis, but what little I saw of Gund seemed nice. Be sure to bring a fan! Even if your roommate is bringing a fan, bring another one. And you might use it during the winter, too--the heaters are, uh, overeager, and you can't control the temperature at all. I think I spent all of February and March with my window open in freshman year.

Yay Gund! Yay dividers! (especially when you have a roommate you [ahem] never talked to...) And get the bed by the window. Yes, fans are crucial. As are personal computers - school lab computers are crowded, irritable, and sticky (and little hives of germs during flu season). But yeah. If you want to meet the nerds, go to the tv lounges and watch a nerdy show. If you watch it, they will come. (I met many many friends that way : D) And go see Kate and Sarah in Mather 410. Tell them Ellen and Becca sent you. They'll love you. But don't ever eat Sarah's "cooking." You might die.

I'll have to bring the copies I will most certainly be getting for Christmas back to school with me. Oh, and the Farscape miniseries that my parents are going to tape and send to me in October, too...

And I was gonna wait a few weeks for camp to end (so I'd actually have that whole 'free time' idea), but... Can I borrow a Farscape DVD or two? Puh-leeeeeez? I'll pay postage. I've already gone through all my Kenster tapes twice, and I've got myself a Crichton craving. (Curse network TV and its lack of cable-itude!) And I'm thinking about blowing part of my shiny new paycheck on a Futurama DVD set... I was planning on starting the school year with some money, but oh well...

Indeed! I broke down and read the scripts for all the unaired eps (see the "extras" section of savewonderfalls.com), but I have a feeling they'll be even better on DVD.

Futurama party! I just ordered the first two seasons at a ridiculously low price on eBay. I don't care if I have to leave clothing and visas behind, those suckers are *definitely* crossing the ocean with me. And have I even seen the Farscape DVDs we gave you? Frankly, I don't care. You saw two of the four episodes on DVD you gave me at Chandra's house. The other two won't make any sense unless you see the second season finale. I may or may not have it on tape. Will check soon; if I do, I'll send the DVD on over too.

I don't think I have the directory anymore, so you need to e-mail me your snailmail address, por favor. I think I have about eight or nine tapes with episodes you haven't seen on them. (Several of them have only one or two Farscape episodes on them, so you can also get lots of random stuff, like The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne, or The Others (the series, not the movie), or The Invisible Man, or Crusade...)
