icepixie: (Caprica go boom)

Whoa. That ended on a much, much happier note than I thought it was going to. I figured after the college kid got injured, it was all going to go straight to hell and stay there until maybe the next episode.

But still: Thank you GOD, BSG is back to having good episodes. Woot.

So, yeah, that was kind of awesome. Lots of chewy colonial sociology and background, which of course I love. I think this season in particular the writers have been trying hard to show that the twelve colonies were considerably less enlightened than, say, Earth ala Star Trek. (Did we ever learn how populous the colonies are, BTW? It's just that they do seem to be painting each of the twelve with a kind of broad brush, and I'm wondering if they're generalizing about millions or billions of people.)

The conflict over workers' rights in a survival situation was fascinating, although I'm surprised that it didn't come up way before this; I can't quite believe that the refinery workers haven't had a day off for the past two/three years. I think there would've been many more injuries, etc. before now if that's true. Also, if Laura was going to give in so easily about taking the kids off the refining line--makes sense, as she's a teacher--then I definitely think it would've come to her attention in at the latest season two.

(Is there no school on the ships? I could've sworn we heard about one way, way back maybe in season one or something. I can see why there wouldn't be universities, but surely there's some kind of ersatz sixth grade, particularly since there was one on New Caprica.)

...Okay, so it was full of plotholes. Still gripping somehow, though.

Speaking of Laura: she was kickass, especially with Baltar. And I liked how she admitted she was wrong (or at any rate unobservant), and Baltar was right, even though she hated that the whole Marxesque philosophy was coming from him and his Mein Kampf. Speaking of Baltar: he was in this episode! Wooo! And so was Harvey!Six!

And heh, Roslin and Pappadama were trading innuendo again. I heart Mom and Dad.
