"Home Again, Home Again"
Jun. 9th, 2007 11:01 amYAY! Hem's new EP finally made it onto iTunes!
The first listen to the whole thing, I was somewhat underwhelmed, but the more I listen to them, the more these songs grow on me. Kind of like a fungus.*
First of all, for those who were curious, "Half Acre" is the same version from Rabbit Songs.
This EP is definitely a continuation of what they were doing on Funnel Cloud. It's very easy to make connections between songs on each. "Half Asleep" is lyrically a bit similar to "He Came to Meet Me" (I'm guessing Steve Curtis wrote it), while musically it has that sweet, piano-based 1930s-musical sound of "Almost Home." "The Meeting Place" is this album's "In a Barrel at Sea" (and is currently my favorite). "Home Again" is a continuation of a thread about marriage and settling that's been around since Eveningland, in "Strays," "Jackson" (although that's a cover), and "Too Late to Turn Back Now."
The other two songs will take some more thinking to figure out how they connect to earlier material. And since comparing and connecting two pieces of writing is probably my all-time most favorite activity, you can be sure I will be thinking about it. :)
All in all, I'd say it's another beautiful addition to their catalogue. They continue to sound like they come from another, past era, but not necessarily the same one on each song. LOVE.
* I did a package earlier this other week that included "fungus proofing" for a piece of outdoor electrical equipment. Made me giggle.
