My favorite recipe (http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/3090) has both cinnamon and cocoa. Wouldn't be the same without either. But I don't know about other recipes.
The one I put it in is my mom's, which is a standard ground beef/chopped onion/kidney beans/can of stewed tomatoes creation, topped with shredded cheese. I don't think it would go as well in the canned varieties, although the ingredients are basically the same.
Your recipe doesn't sound all that different from mine, except for the cocoa. readercat made it two years ago for a potluck and it was so addictingly good that I had to make it myself. Give it a try--it's a nice alternative to the usual recipe and not at all difficult to make.
I'm not married to cinnamon in my chili, but I always appreciate it. My mom has two recipes, one with cinnamon and one without. I love both, it just sort of depends on my mood.
I have no comment on the chilli front (although I always add a bit of powdered chocolate - does that count), I just wanted to say how much I love your icon. Those were the days, sigh.

I do like the idea of cocoa powder. And we might even have some, somewhere...
