I was at the pizza place near school this afternoon, having lunch with Nancy and a former student, and ESPN was on the TV. For some reason, maybe breaking news, they put up a card with picture and dates, and I was the only one who saw it. I sat there saying "No, no no no!" until they looked up, but by then it was gone.
I need to get a bunch of work done so I can watch The Sting tonight, and be sad. And wish even more that I'd got my arse to New York the other year to see him in Our Town. :(
I have to admit that the only movie I've ever seen with him in it is The Sting, and I remember not liking it a whole lot. But I admired his philanthropy tremendously, and we always heard about how generous he was to Kenyon. He seemed like just a really wonderful man.
I had no idea that he was an alumni and benefactor of your college.
Yeah, he was a huge donor to the second most-recent capital campaign, back in the '90s, and I know he was a regular contributor for all kinds of things. He used to come back every few years and direct a student play, too.
He and Allison Janney of The West Wing are the two recentish celebrity grads we tend to pull out when talking about that sort of thing, but if you didn't go to Kenyon, it's unlikely you'd know. (We also can claim that other presidential election-stealer, Rutherford B. Hayes, and of course a slew of poets and writers--Robert Lowell, James Wright, E.L. Doctorow, Laura Hillenbrand, etc. etc. Mostly they all graduated in the 40s and 50s, I think, except for Hillenbrand.)
You should give Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid a try; it's a fabulous movie.
I will once grad school stops kicking my ass... :)
