My 102 class is reading the current issue of Us Weekly for Monday's class (A is doing a few classes on celebrity hero-worship), so I had to read it as well. I...huh. I've never looked in that magazine before, and it's essentially a slew of names I've never heard of. I had to give up about two-thirds of the way through, because wow, I don't care about any of these people or about whom they're dating.

Oh, wait! I did recognize one name. They had a half-page on the Obamas. Look at how attuned I am to pop culture!

(Another "I win at being a dork" example from last week: the guy next to me in my Victorian class was talking about music with another guy before class, and said, "'Stockholm Syndrome.' Where do I know that from?" I said, "It's that thing where the prisoner starts to sympathize...oh." I'm officially Temperance Brennan-in-training, aren't I?)

Back to Oliver Twist, which I have to say is much more enjoyable than that magazine was.

I'm selectively pop-culture illiterate. I know nothing (nor do I care) about American media and who the latest stars are, but politics is another thing entirely. And politics is pop culture, in a way. Sorta. And my favourite singer is Elton John, who is nothing if not a pop-culture icon.
