BSG 4.19: "Someone to Watch Over Me"
Feb. 28th, 2009 12:45 pmOH FRAK OH FRAK, someone tell me that Laura did not just die at the end. SOMEONE TELL ME THIS. TELL ME THIS RIGHT NOW. KARA WILL GIVE HER HYBRID BLOOD AND SHE WILL BE JUST. FINE.*
*deep breaths* Okay. Calmer now.
So if we play the one-word-to-describe-the-episode game again, this time I choose "disorienting." Although in a good way, and in a way that was generally explained by the end of the episode, so yay. I adored the continual presence of the piano music, and the sequence with Starbuck's pilots' meeting narration ("your mission is the same as last week and the week before and the week before") over all those different, repetitive scenes of her waking up, showering, and giving orders was very good at creating a feeling of hopelessness. And then the rest of the episode provided drama, and something resembling some answers, and it felt much more like a really-close-to-the-finale episode than last week's.
For the first time ever, I was really, really intrigued by Starbuck. And I liked her as a character. I didn't want to kill her once during the hour! Piano skillz and wistful childhood memories are apparently the keys to my heart. And okay, so are we all pretty much sure that Daniel the Cylon is her father? Because it seemed pretty cut and dried by the end there. I was starting to think that the composer guy she was hanging out with was in fact her father, finally revealing himself, but then of course he turned out to be a figment of her imagination. Now the only question is how Daniel (aka Driedele or whatever the name on that cassette was [speaking of which--seriously? They have faster-than-light spaceships and are still using cassette tapes?]) managed to get to Caprica before Cavil destroyed his line, and apparently before all the other skinjobs? The timeline is not terribly clear to me here.
They brought the song back! Via both Hera and Kara! (Hmmm. Subtle rhyme-linking going on there?) Because of course both of them are hybrids. Now I'm wondering why Kara was never in the opera house--which, when Laura was NOT DYING ARGH, I figured was going to make a reappearance, but no dice, I see. And now my question is, can Kara resurrect? Or is something more going on with her dead body on Earth? I'm leaning towards "something more," but I don't know what it would be. I still wonder a bit if she's in fact a Lord of Kobol.
The Chief-and-multiple-Eights storyline was completely opaque to me until the very end, when I finally figured out which three Eights were involved. Although I'm still confused about the timeline--at the beginning, was the Chief actually sleeping with Nameless Eight in the Tan Shirt, or was that a flashback to his relationship with Boomer? And how much trouble is he going to be in when the Fightin' Agathons find out he made the switch of Nameless Eight for Boomer and let her walk out with Hera-in-a-box? *g* Not to mention Adama's going to be plenty pissed about her blowing a hole in his ship. (It looked relatively contained, though, yes? No boom today?) I think the Chief's going to be on trial for treason pretty soon.
Wait, hang on, there's one more Eight unaccounted for. (They need to wear nametags or something.) The one who keeps hanging around Anders--is she totally different?
I see we have Cylon pilots and now a Cylon Quorum member now. All the clubbing over the head about integration last week appears to have paid off.
After that hull breach, and given all the doom and gloom about how Galactica is on her last legs, I'm willing to bet we get one more jump out of her in the finale and then she's toast. Better find a habitable planet soon, y'all.
And now I'm going to go read Bear McCreary's blog, because after this episode it's sure to be interesting.
* Actually, if there's an answer in the preview, don't let me know. I want to be surprised.

Date: 2009-02-28 06:40 pm (UTC)So there were really only 2 eights, plus the one Chief wrenched and stuck in the brig.
The one around Anders is just a random one who is there with a 6 to show cylon discussions or something. (Why the Leoben never is, I don't know).
Ooh, Bear's blog. I'd forgotten. Must read.

They've run out of money for Callum Keith Rennie?
Ooh, Bear's blog. I'd forgotten. Must read.
It's a doozy this week.

Date: 2009-03-02 05:16 am (UTC)Ahh, now I know who you mean. That looked more like a grey jacket to me (definitely a jacket, in any case), so I was confused. I think she was just a random Eight who was helping with the work, and nothing more. I don't recall him sleeping with her, though?
Is it just me, or did the pic of Starbuck's dad on the tape (you sure it was a tape? Looked like she was playing it in a CD player there at the end with Sam) look freakishly like her? As in, long blond hair? I blinked on that one a few times.
Somehow I missed the whole Laura-in-distress thing there at the end. Just went back and watched the last few minutes and can't figure out how I didn't see it before. I dunno, I think she's gonna last to the finale, but all episode they were making clear that she really wasn't in good shape, so this is the end. I dunno, I'm not too invested in her sticking around since she was all George Bush last year and has been totally abdicating her responsibilities this year. Whatever, Laura.
(Another flister of mine thinks that Galactica is the dying leader, not Laura, which I find interesting, since the ship is obviously not much longer for this world.)
I am confused about what happened with the breach. It looked to me like Boomer barely got out before the doors closed, and then had trouble steering and hit the side of the ship. Is that not what happened?

Definitely a tape. And yeah, the guy on it does look a lot like her.

Meep! Maybe it's my Laura-centric brain, but that was totally what I came away from the episode concerned about. As you may have noticed from my entry. ;) I think she's going to make it to wherever the hell they end up and promptly croak, myself. I too subscribe to the idea of Galactica as the dying leader, although I'm placing side bets on Bill Adama.

I'm pretty sure that's what happened. Then very soon after she struck the side of the ship and winged her raptor, she jumped into hyperspace or whatever they call it, and I think that probably did some damage to Galactica as well.

Date: 2009-03-02 03:45 pm (UTC)Yeah, like I said, I'm not sure how I missed that, especially when I went back and watched the end again. Maybe I was too wrapped up in the Starbuck stuff, since I've actually been liking her lately and, if I'm honest, wishing that Laura "Better Than Everyone Else And Can Keep My Powerful Job Even Though I Don't Actually Want To DO It Anymore" Roslin would leave valuable screen time for characters I still care about. I mean, I don't hate her, but she's not the character I loved anymore, and I'm just kind of tired of her. She lost her shine, for me, when she went all George Bush, and I just haven't been able to get past it. I don't really trust her anymore.
So that may be part of why I didn't notice. I dunno.
Glad to see I didn't misunderstand what happened to the ship--though I didn't realize it was an actual breach, at first, and couldn't figure out why the ship was falling apart. Maybe I was tired by the end? Hmm...
