After the first few scenes that were taken directly from the original pilot and thus suffered from comparison, this got much better. I still miss Piven and Marshall (especially Marshall), but it seems like Claire and Trevor are going to be written and acted as somewhat different people than they used to be. Cannavale's Trevor isn't as madcap as Piven's; I think he'll blend in with regular society more, which means he can be used in different ways. I think they're trying to make Paulson's Claire less of the "love by the book because she's been in school forever and considers herself an empiricist" type of person that Marshall's was and more of a "love by the book because she was hurt in the past and this is the way to keep that from happening again" type of person.

I think it can go good places. We'll see. I liked that Claire got to be right this time, and Trevor fully admitted it. (I think in the original Trevor was for Dave and Madeleine from the beginning, right?) I like the idea of them working together as well as at cross-purposes, which we didn't really get until "End of an Eros" in the original.

Other things:

- The mariachi karaoke is going to get old FAST.

- DOGGEHS! Aw, Felix picks up strays. Perfect.

- They kept the dart trick. Awesome. And Claire tries it herself! LOVE IT! That was a great moment.

- I liked the way they made use of the new technology that's come around since 1998. Cell phones, Trevor "Googlemapping" the "restaurant"...it's kind of startling to see how different technology is in just a decade.

- The mystery of what Trevor's heartbreak was (if indeed there was one) is a good layer to add, and of course it works with Claire's obvious heartbreak of the past. Claire's surety of a reason behind Trevor's delusion does seem to give more credence to the "he's not Cupid" position, though; I seem to recall she didn't really have such a fully-formed theory in the original, or at least she didn't by this point in the series.

- Love that they kept the names Dave and Madeleine. Heh. And that they kept the bead moving while Dave and Maddie were getting together and while Trevor and Claire were talking on the phone. What I liked about that in the original series was that you could read the bead moving as either D/M or Claire/Trevor; it's more obviously D/M this time around, though.

I had something to say on this week's Castle as well, but I can't remember what it was. I did enjoy it, though. They should just give up on this pretense of solving cases and spend the hour making me laugh.
