icepixie: ([B5] Shadow ships)

Hurrah! I have finished my Joyce paper! Well, yes, the conclusion still needs some work, and the way I shoehorned a preview of the point I made about Emma Clery into the introduction could be more elegant, but the vast bulk of it is done, and I still think it's the best critical piece I've ever written. I would still prefer to have not had to put in the last quarter, because it's not as good as the first three quarters, but it's not bad, either. If I do revise it into a conference paper, I'm going to try hard to expand those first three quarters a bit more in order to hit what appears to be the eight-page minimum for most conferences, and dump the section on Emma.

Anyway, obviously something like that calls for...more Babylon 5. I got the last disc of S3 today, with all of its excitement.

Shadow Dancing
- Should they really be spoiling us for Anna's return in the guest credits?

- Well, Zack, Garibaldi's worried about Ivanova, who's buggered off to be Shadowbait. What else would he be worried about? Well, yeah, Franklin, sure, but work with me here! ;)

- Oh, Marcus. You are very sweet, but a big weenie. Translate it right!

- Marcus, talking about gardens and four-poster beds isn't being on watch...

- Bwaha, and Susan tells him that with just a look. Hee!

- Susan sliding off the Minbari bed backwards in 3...2...1...

- "And then we will spend the night together." Okay, then! I guess she got tired of waiting for him to make the next move after she brought him that fleet of White Stars...

- Or not. Okay, have I mentioned before that a really, really big squick of mine is one character watching the other sleep (exceptions made for comas and other dire situations)? I tend to run away when a fanfic writer uses it, and here it is IN CANON, AUGH. I personally find the whole idea creepy as hell. So I'll just forget this ceremony ever existed.

- Today is a very bad day to be Stephen Franklin.

- Susan getting called back on duty just as she finishes making her pillow bed in 3...2...1...

- Can the Minbari on the White Star suddenly understand English, or is Ivanova just barking orders to Marcus?

- "That's a loooot of ships." You said it, Susan.

- "Well, who wants to live forever?"
"I do, actually. But what the hell." Heh, Marcus.

- Franklin's other self is a big meanie.

- Hello, alliance fleet!

- Oooh. That Minbari tactical room is definitely spiffy. Although, ah, since when does Delenn have tactical training? I can totally buy her having learned it at some point, but did we know she knew it before?

- Showing characters speaking without giving us the audio was not a good directorial choice there. Looks like you forgot to play your audio track.

- Uh...so did they win?

- Apparently so. Thanks for the explanation.

- And then Susan and Marcus ran off and had sex. Obviously. *g* I need a Marcus (or Ivanova/Marcus) icon so badly. Hmmm.

- Uhhhhh did Delenn know about Ivanova's telepathy before this? Is Ivanova going to kill Sheridan in his sleep for revealing it?

- La la la, I'm ignoring the creepy sleep-watching...

- Ah, here's where the poor snowglobe comes in. And then Anna! Who looks nothing like the Anna we saw before!

Z'ha'dum
- I see they rerecorded the flashback with the new actress. Good call.

- Has there been a more obviously evil-masquerading-as-good guest character in the history of ever? I know she's supposed to be not right inna head anymore, but she couldn't try a little harder to be believable?

- Wait, Sheridan and Delenn are serious enough about each other for him to talk about building a life together? They just kissed each other for the first time two episodes ago!

- Aaaand...I feel bad for them, and for Delenn in particular, but... *checks self* Nope. Damn not given. I should give up on trying to care about them together.

- Uh, actually, the Shadows are totally what you think they are. Don't listen to her.

- How are you bluffing her, Sheridan? I swear, the man bluffs someone every time he's onscreen.

- And here, where Sheridan agrees to go with Anna, was where JMS scrawled a big "I HEART JOSEPH CAMPBELL <3 <3 <3" across his script. From this interview: "You leave the world that you're in and go into a depth or into a distance or up to a height. There you come to what was missing in your consciousness in the world you formerly inhabited. Then comes the problem either of staying with that, and letting the world drop off, or returning with that boon and trying to hold on to it as you move back into your social world again."

Then he did it AGAIN at the end, with a literal leap into an endless deep. Yay for myth.

- Hmmm. Is snow in New York code for something more specific than just "goin' to Z'ha'dum, BRB"?

- ...Are those airplane wheels? On an exceptionally rocky surface? And they've not been punctured?

- Sheridan! Don't drink anything! You are totally Persephone right now, and that tea is made of pomegranate!

- ...Did Sheridan ever think that maybe he was supposed to listen to Delenn-in-the-future? That the fall of Centauri Prime came about because he did go to Z'ha'dum? *coughcoughtheremaybearelevanttitleinS5cough* I mean, I hope it didn't, because that future looked horrible, and I sincerely wish it not to come about, but...did the thought ever cross his mind?

- I knew the Vorlons and Shadows were related somehow.

- And...Shadows are rabid social Darwinists? Londo's accusation of Morden using the Centauri as "agents of chaos" makes a lot of sense now.

- The obvious rejoinder: How much more could we have achieved through peace?

- Aha, the Vorlons created the telepaths. I figured as much.

- The second gun Sheridan packed appearing in 3...2...1...

- Oh, good thinking, Sheridan. Too bad about losing the White Star, though. Oh well.

- Down the rabbit hole... (Hmmm. Has anyone ever applied Campbell's theory to Alice? I must research...)

- The Shadows would really, really hate Stoppard's Arcadia.

- WHAT?! Garibaldi got sucked into a Shadow vessel? NOOOOOOOOOO!!!! That means he won't ever be whole again! I REFUSE TO ACCEPT THIS! DO YOU HEAR ME, SHOW? I REFUSE! YOU'D BETTER HAVE A DAMN GOOD WAY AROUND THAT NEXT SEASON!

S4 coming up...whenever I get another breather. The rough draft of my pedagogy paper is due in nine days (I thought I had more time than that. Crap.), and the Victorian paper on the 29th. That one's aaaaall about the new historical approach rather than the failed formalism of my earlier papers for this class (well, failed in the sense that I still got a good grade, I knew they were crap), so perhaps it will go easier. I do know a bit about Victorian history, after all.

Oh, and there's grading in there as well. Gotta remember to do that this weekend...

Aaaand there's another thing I have no memory of noticing. :)

Did you watch the features? Or maybe it was the JMS commentary--that's probably it. If you didn't, there's no reason you would have noticed.
