I will in all likelihood be going on semi-radio silence until my defense in three weeks, but before I disappear, I offer another round of music recs:

Rosie Thomas
I have some issues with Rosie Thomas. I find her music either enchanting or unbearably twee. Her first album, some kind of concept album about childhood where each song is finished off with recordings from her childhood featuring high-pitched kid voices speaking inanities, makes me gag a little.* However, I like quite a bit of her newer, less precious stuff. Such as I Play Music, which is upbeat, but also a little bittersweet. Or my favorite, Since You've Been Around, which one day I may make an Ivanova/Marcus vid to, because yes.

Ari Hest
Ari Hest is a new Pandora discovery for me. I bought the album Twelve Mondays, and while it wasn't as impressive as the previews made it sound, it's got some good tracks on it. My hands-down favorite is Ride the Brake, which in addition to being jangly and peppy, captures the immediate post-college experience very well. Another I like a lot is Cranberry Lake, which is a duet between him and a female singer.

Kate Rusby
I've loved Kate for years now. She's a British folk singer with a lovely voice and an immense talent for writing original material that sounds like it came out of a centuries-old tradition while avoiding hackneyed stereotype. I had a hard time choosing just a few to link, but here they are: Sho Heen, The Fairest of All Yarrow, and The Cobbler's Daughter (all from the same album, actually; it's definitely my favorite). She also does some inventive covers that I tend to prefer to the originals; she's done one of Iris Dement's Our Town that I love, and one of The Kinks's Village Green Preservation Society.

Kate Walsh
Rounding things out with another Kate. Fireworks is sad and lovely.

* Okay, it doesn't help that my Pavlovian reaction to kid voices, even on recordings or TV, is to cringe and mutter, "Keep it AWAY."

I've only heard one Rosie Thomas Album (These Friends of Mine), but what I've heard is really good. "Much Farther to Go" is a great song.
