This. This is hilarious. I rarely read the Chronicle of Higher Ed, but I'm glad I tuned in today. It slayed me with "Adam...put up mankind's first justification: 'The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat' (Genesis 3:12)" and only got better. (I, uh, may have gone to join that Facebook group as soon as I finished reading.)

When some poor student of mine only turns in four bibliography entries instead of five and complains about the grade, I'll be ready. "You remember Lot's wife and how she got turned into a pillar of salt? Know why? Because she DIDN'T FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS! At least I'm only taking ten points off."

We live in the age of the excuse. As much as that terrifies me, it is heartening that someone your age (jaysis, now I feel old!) sees it, too. It's not like it's been forever since I finished college (not quite 20 years!) but it often feels like we were somehow transported to Planet Lameass overnight when folks my age--and older--look at kids in high school and college now. ::shudder::

We do. We so do. Sometimes I feel myself falling into that trap, and I have to give myself a mental slap, because I REFUSE to become like some of the students I see in places like Rate Your Students. (For the most part, my kids are fairly good about not making excuses when they screw up, but not taking responsibility...yeah we've had discussions about them needing to actually do the things laid out on the syllabus.)

I feel like there was less of it when I was in college, but then again, I was never in an intro comp class, so my experience could be skewed.
