One of the very greatest things about X-Files fanfic is how much of it there is. I never have to read bad fic just because that's all there is! Now I remember why I loved being in this fandom so much.

However, even in otherwise well-written fics, there are the occasional, shall we say, unusual turns of phrase. Like the following: "[Scully] turned to him, her eyes the color of cyanide."

...At least it's not "cerulean" yet again?

See, in massive fandoms, I often have a hard time FINDING the good fic, because there is just SO MUCH crap to wade through. That's definitely how I feel about sgwun fandom. I've read all the people I know are awesome, and then I'm like ".... omg, why must everyone else be writing in the first person with no goddamned closing perentheses inside their quotation marks!?"

I ran into that trouble with SG1 and Atlantis, but for some reason, there just doesn't seem to be as much dirt to dig through before finding XF gems. It does help that I've been using recs lists--and there are plenty--but even randomly clicking on things at Gossamer gives me a relatively high signal to noise level. I think maybe it has something to do with the majority of the series airing before the internet got really big, and having the main fic outlet be a newsgroup, which casual browsers didn't get into.
