B5 Rewatch: 1x07-08
Jun. 7th, 2010 02:27 pmSpoilers, as always, for the entire series below the cut. And if you're reading this on Dreamwidth, you can now click the little arrow beside the link and have it unfold before your eyes like magic!
1x07: War Prayer, 1x08: And the Sky Full of Stars
When I watched S3 for the first time, I scoffed at the idea that Nightwatch, etc. could be so powerful without imminent threat of an alien invasion. Apparently I'd forgotten these episodes, because Malcolm and his cronies put up a fairly good case that there's widespread xenophobia back on Earth. And then in the next episode, we get more background on the Human/Minbari war, and oh, look, there's the reason why so many humans have become xenophobes. Even before Clark, there are government commissions to investigate Human/Minbari collusion.
(I still think they could've come back to this more in S2, because I'm pretty sure they let it slide before dragging Nightwatch into things, but now I feel a bit dumb.)
In other news, OH, THE DRAMATIC IRONY in "Sky Full of Stars." That episode was like 100% pure ferrous goodness. Why did they let you go? OH, WAIT, BECAUSE YOU'RE VALEN AND DELENN IS YOUR SEVERAL-TIMES-GREAT GRANDDAUGHTER. Uh, not that they knew that. They just knew that you have a Minbari soul. BECAUSE YOU'RE VALEN.
Sinclair asked the Gray Council who they were and what they wanted. OMG. My brain just burst, I think.
And then there's Franklin asking Delenn what she did during the war. OMG. I snickered, but it was a really painful snicker. Oh, Delenn. Oh, Humans. Oh, Minbari. This whole episode was like looking through a telescope backwards.
I'm sort of amused at the implications of the baddie's ending line that it felt like he and Sinclair were "still inside." Possibly the entire rest of the series is Jeff's hallucination. Heh.
Small things:
- Hee, Ivanova and Garibaldi are bantering again. "Love your new look." / "Considering the situation, Garibaldi, I'd think you have something on your mind other than my look." Tee hee. I now want to write fic where he cheers her up after the events of the episode. (Oh, Susan. You just can't catch a break, can you? I think that's why I keep trying to write fluff for her, because she just needs some sometimes.)
- But at least she gets to be totally awesome as she takes down Malcolm!
- Delenn got scary at the beginning of that episode. Eee.
- Londo is so cute when he does a good deed. If only he could just keep doing that. :( (Then we'd have no show, of course, but...oh, Londo.)
- Franklin's starship hitchhiking is just further evidence of his awesome. Plus he destroyed his notes rather than have them used to kill Minbari. Of all the characters, I think he might be the one I most want to sit down and have a drink with. (Ivanova's still my favorite, but I think I'd rather follow her around and take lessons in ass-kicking from her.)
