Really just lovely. You know, it struck me watching it this time how often space porn is cut to action-y, quick beat music, but how well it works set to something like this, really melodic and contemplative. I wish I could be more articulate than that, heh; I'm not exactly sure what point I'm making.

For some reason, I tend to naturally want to pair space porn and slower music. I think perhaps I got really into the Voyager credits at a particularly impressionable age. (Yeah, the show kind of sucked, but man, their credits were PRETTY.)

I haven't got to Voyager yet. I won't start it until I've watched DS9, and I won't start DS9 until I've finished TNG, and I won't finish TNG because once I do there will be no more new TNG. Which is kind of a dumb system. (Seriously, I was moving right along with TNG and then I realized that I only had two seasons left, and I've watched like four episodes in the last six months.)

Personally, I'd advise avoiding Voyager all together. Seriously, there are so many better things you could do with your time than waste it watching that show. Just watch the pretty credits and be done with it.

DS9, though, definitely worthwhile. Most of the time, anyway.

But I like Kate Mulgrew! She's so pretty! Is that not reason enough to watch? (I'm totally serious, BTW. That's like 90% of why I plan to watch.)

But her character is also CRA. ZEE., and this goes completely unacknowledged by the other characters. Like, after about three seasons, this woman really, really does not need to be charge of a starship. Also, there are the usual Trek irritations of the Reset Button after every episode (even after six seasons, the ship looks brand new, and they have plenty of food, plenty of shuttles despite the fact that they seem to lose one in every episode, etc. etc.), complete lack of character development (for three-quarters of the characters, the S1 and S7 versions are interchangeable) and stupid one-off love interests (Cap'n Katie falls in love with a HOLOGRAM).

Think of it this way: Voyager and BSG start from a very similar premise. Imagine BSG with every single one of its teeth removed: there's very little real danger, everything gets tied up with a nice little bow at the end of the hour, and the fact that they're stranded 70 years from home is treated as so much background, to be referenced maybe once every ten episodes. I think there may have been an arc early on about a Maquis spy, but it was over in about five episodes. (For that matter, the Maquis and the Starfleeters integrate entirely into one crew, no problems, during the pilot, and their really quite important difference in origins is mentioned about twice more in seven years.) You now have Voyager.

Granted, I speak with the particular flaming ire of the former fan and there may be some hyperbole here, but really, it's a terrible show. The only bits worth watching involve B'Elanna (and, consequently, B'Elanna/Tom). Argh argh argh.

Hee! I think this might be the most impassioned "don't watch this show" I've ever read! Yeah, I mean, I've heard some of this stuff before, and like...I don't know. When I think about why I love TNG, it's almost completely because I like the characters and actors. I don't actually care about the stories that much. I'd prefer them to be good and make sense, but it's not the primary reason I'm watching.

It's sort of a moo point right now, since I won't be started any new shows for quite a while - my TV backlog right now is sort of staggering.

Heh. It's always the people who are trying to distance themselves from former affiliations that write the most scathing ones.

Generally, I would say the characters on TNG are drawn better than the ones on VOY, or at least that they don't have to be stupid as often, but it's been soooooo long since I watched either that I could be wrong about that. The actors on TNG are definitely better, IMO; most of the Voyager actors remain wooden for the entire seven years.

Okay, one more reason you should avoid Voyager: there is an episode in which Janeway and Tom Paris break the Warp 10 barrier in a shuttle, which makes them "evolve" into lizards who then crash on a planet and have lizard babies before the rest of the crew finds them and the Doctor gives them a magical serum that "de-evolves" them back into humans. (Or something to that effect; at any rate, there's a rescue mission and they come back as humans, leaving their lizard babies to slither around on the planet for ever and ever.)

I WISH I WERE MAKING THAT UP.

The sad thing is that it's played totally seriously, even though it could've been amazing as someone's cracky bad dream or something.

I'm short a DS9 icon, but I am definitely seconding the recommendation. I have lots of fond nostalgia for TNG, but DS9 is my favorite by far of the Star Trek series, and I think you'd love it. It has some pretty fantastic arc-work, for a Star Trek series... and does it help to say that Ronald D. Moore was involved? Because he totally was. Supervising producer and then co-executive producer for the whole run, and writer for 30 episodes, according to IMDB. ♥

Oh, I'm definitely planning on watching it. And I might just forget about finishing TNG first, since I don't really care about spoilers in the Star Trek universe.

So far, I've been able to ID almost every RDM episode of TNG just based on the writing in the teaser. He has a pretty distinctive voice. I definitely trust him as a showrunner, that's for sure; for whatever missteps he might make (and there is no perfect show), he really works hard to put out quality product.
