Photos: Downtown

This weekend, it was actually nice out--sunny, in the mid 60s--unlike today and tomorrow and all of next week, when it's supposed to snow a-frakking-gain. You know the implicit contract in my moving back south was that while summers would be dreadful, I would not have to deal with frozen precipitation more than two or three times per year. Argh.
Anyway, I took advantage of the nice weather and went downtown to see if there was anything I hadn't yet photographed. There was in fact very little, but I persevered. Et voila:

We are a kitschy, kitschy city. If the above doesn't convince you, look below:

I hear cowboy boots are actually quite comfortable. I'm not sure if I believe that.

I know I'm usually all about the purple, but even I feel that this might be in poor taste.

I imagine this is the only city in the world where there's a feed store across the street from a Hard Rock Cafe. (Sadly, to get a picture of the juxtaposition I would've had to be in the river, so you'll just have to take my word for it.)

The pigeons seem to enjoy it, anyway.

Obligatory skyline shot from the fairly-recent pedestrian bridge, and closeup of the warehouses along the river. It seems that pretty much everyone has gotten back on their feet after the Flood of the Millennium last May (when the river decided to head five blocks into the city), so that's good.
Despite the determinedly countrified air of the tourist section, the newer architecture downtown is blessedly free of ugly influences from Gehry and his ilk. It varies between neo-neoclassical and neo-Art Deco. It's like the city is building for me!

Symphony hall, 2005.

Birch Criminal Justice Building (kind of an annex of the Davidson County Courthouse, I think), 2006. The actual county courthouse is a real Art Deco WPA building from the 1930s, but a.) I didn't get a good shot of it, and b.) this one's prettier, anyway.
But back to older buildings, like the Hermitage Hotel:

And the state capitol building:

The above is my favorite of the pictures I took on Sunday. It's a fountain in Legislative Plaza (for reference, I took the previous picture from this same spot), in front of the portico, or piazza, or whatever it would be called, of the War Memorial Building.

Apparently someone was taking an old car out for a spin. This is the "retro" mode on my camera.

Now I feel kind of bad for not taking some prettier shots. There are more than two attractive buildings in town. *g* This guy has done some awesome HDR shots of the city.
