First, have some pretty pictures.

That was definitely a better outing than the pilot. DD's character still does way too much that's not ME-related, and the whole "she's so good she tells her boss what to do" thing with Curtis is falling very flat, but everything definitely felt more even this time around. I liked especially that Sonja Sohn's Detective Baker got more to do; I've never seen her in anything before, but I liked her a lot in this episode. Jeri Ryan (Kate) could still use a little more screentime, but I liked her quip that she was hoping to "contain" Megan by pairing her with Baker and Morris.
I've managed to get invested in the Megan/Lacey storyline already, which is good, although I do think they need to give it a rest for a couple episodes after this and let it play out a bit more slowly (I guess the smothery, moving-too-fast feeling was what they were going for in this episode, though, so props to them for achieving it). Maybe they can spend a couple episodes showing Megan attempting other methods of having a personal life? That could be hilarious. Oh, and if it could involve Peter, that would be nice, since against my better judgment I appear to be shipping the hell out of them. (Or at least, I'm shipping them when I'm not slashing Megan and Kate. They would be great too.) I just...I always fall for the Defrosting the Ice Queen trope, especially when it's done with sarcasm, okay? I am weak.
The case was reasonably interesting, though the ending came out of nowhere. I'm unsure if I just wasn't paying attention or if it was actually supposed to be that surprising. Megan still jumps to conclusions too much for my taste, but at least she seemed to use actual evidence to point the finger at the father. Did enjoy Curtis and Ethan doing their own investigative work, although again it beggars believability that coroners would be out in the field doing that kind of thing. I guess I can get used to it, though, because funny goes a long way with me. I get the impression they might be trying to include more humor, which would take this from "promising" to "likable."
Huh. I think I might actually have started hoping for this to make it to a second season. Congratulations, show.

Date: 2011-04-04 09:38 pm (UTC)It actually reminds me a bit of S1 Bones. Not as funny, but Dana Delaney can do the serious aspects she's given muuuuuch better than Emily Deschanel. And the guy who's vaguely in Booth's position is actually likable. These people concentrate on the case more than the funny or the character-relevant, though, which is unfortunate, because the cast is fantastic and the characters look like they would be really interesting if they could get out from under the murder of the week. (Or maybe that's just me. Please, TV gods, can we stop with the damn procedurals and get back to character dramas?)

Dear TV: why must you insist on making us trip over these plots all the time??

Date: 2011-04-05 03:24 am (UTC)Heh. I have faith that it will turn itself into a good show! I mean, 100% improved from episode one to two surely portends good things, right? And they actually appear to have hired a script supervisor, unlike some crime dramas I could name. A decent chunk of the Megan/her daughter plot this time relied on events that transpired in the first episode, and Megan and Peter even referenced the conversation they'd had last time at one point.
...Okay, so I have low standards at the moment. Still.
Dear TV: why must you insist on making us trip over these plots all the time??
Exactly! Actually, it's not that I object to plots, it's that I object to the endless parade of murder mysteries. At this point, I'm almost ready to welcome a show that's still about cops, but, like, the burglary division. Vice. Missing persons. ANYTHING ELSE. But what I would really like is a show that centers on, I don't know, a group of stage actors, or travel agents, or grad students, or something that's not a passel of cops/lawyers/doctors. Or chuck the workplace drama idea altogether and have a show centering on something else.

Date: 2011-04-05 01:13 pm (UTC)When it reaches this mythical "good" level, I'll be there with bells on. Until then, you are my guinea pig. : )

Hehehe: CSI: They Stole My Big-Screen! I could get behind that.
or travel agents
...I would watch that.

It would be more entertaining than yet more homicide!
...I would watch that.
Me too. Although travel agenting is kind of a dead-in-the-water career now, since the rise of online travel and hotel booking. Maybe it could be set in an earlier decade.
(I'm somewhat more interested in the grad student idea, though. Oh, the intrigue and nefariousness in my relatively sane department!)

Hm, a drama where the smart people aren't trying to figure out what killed/is killing the victim of the week... how refreshing!

It would be amazing. And if it were set in an English department, because of course it should be, there could be gratuitous literary allusions!
P.S. Speaking of smart people and victims of the week, you should start watching Body of Proof! It got good this week! *bounces*

!!!! My evil plan worked! :D Seriously, I think you'll like it. It's verrrry Bonesy, but with characters who appear to be adults rather than overgrown teenagers. Structurally, it isn't put together quite as well as Bones (though I have faith they'll get there), but Dana Delany makes up for a lot. As does the fact that so far, there are no characters whom I'd like to pitch off the nearest cliff, unlike, oh, everyone but Hodgins. I kind of love everyone here, especially Megan. (There may be some vicarious enjoyment of her smartassery going on...)

Date: 2011-04-15 03:07 am (UTC)There has been no explanation for why Megan is so heavily involved in the actual investigative part, aside from "Dana Delany is the star." It is, I agree, a big weakness. She did say in an interview that she'd gone to the showrunners and said, "Dude, 18-hour days suck. Give more scenes to the other people," and they listened, so I'm hopeful that by the back half of these thirteen episodes, there will be a slightly more believable balance. (Although at least I don't think they will ever go to such heights of ridiculosity as the Vomit Comet interview on Bones. I hope, anyway.) I've basically fanwanked that at some point, she got some police training, and she and Peter have some kind of special status as ME/police liaisons that allows her to interview suspects and whatnot. Kind of in the same way that Brennan has obviously gotten some kind of FBI permission to do all she does, but we just haven't seen it onscreen.
I feel like there are so, so many good elements (like Megan herself, whom I have grown disturbingly attached to in only four episodes, maybe because I see a little too much of myself in her; also Delany is IMO phenomenal, and the rest of the cast is very good), but they haven't quite figured out how to put them together in the best possible light. I think it will get there, though! And I think it'll be soon! *ever hopeful*
