Not bad! Not the greatest thing ever, but it could've been worse. I always appreciate it when a show built around murder cases and only murder cases finally does something different. I even admired their desire to make it about more than just the standard hostage crisis, even if it was a little difficult to make the other story compelling when it only got five minutes of screentime. (I'm not against cop shows as a rule, I suppose--I certainly watch enough of them, though that's more because half the shows on TV are crime-related--but I do wish more of them changed up their formula like due South did, with Fraser walking into a bank robbery or stumbling onto environmental violations rather than "murder comes across the desk, go investigate, solve murder" forever and ever, world without end. So yay breaking the formula!)

Granted, due South and Burn Notice both did far more entertaining things with the "hostages in a bank" plot, but two weeks ago I was ready to give up on the show, so. Baby steps, baby steps. At least there was some humor. Hee, "Okay, Castle Jr., wanna try thinking like a cop now?" Awww. Also, Beckett telling "Trapper John" that if he hurt Castle she would put a bullet through his skull was hilarious, in a "yay, Beckett!" kind of way. The chief hostage negotiator dude's reaction was pretty amusing as well.

Speaking of Trapper John, how did he not recognize Beckett's voice when she was in there posing as a paramedic?

Anyway, other good points:

Martha! Martha being awesome! Finally, they use her well. It feels like years since she got more than a couple lines in an episode.

THANK GOD Alexis and Ashley broke up. That storyline needed to end months ago.

Beckett being obviously thrilled to see Castle alive, to the point where Martha had to remind her there were other people waiting to have their zip-tie handcuffs cut off, was sweet. Beckett coming over for dinner at Casa Castle at the end was nice as well.

I was waiting for this, too. I can handwave it that she was speaking very lowly, but there were several such conveniences where the uber-comptent bad guys just...weren't. Simply to serve the plot.

Which is so typical, but hey. I'm willing to forgive when we get fun character moments.

Also, yes, MARTHA! Just awesome.

And Castle keeping score! Naturally.

I liked this one, too. Yay for that.

the fake-robbers didn't mean to get blown up, did they? That was Evil Abusive Husband Dude's way of not paying them, right?

No, they didn't mean to get blown up. Someone theorized that killing them was a way for the bad guy to cover his tracks (i.e. no one left alive who could point to him). The problem with that is that they characterized the robbers as super-competent mercenaries. Super-competent mercs are NOT gonna trust the explosives to some guy that's hired them, but won't be with the explosives. No freakin' way! So I really didn't buy that. It was just a plot convenience.

Thank YOU for the spider!

Totally OT...

... but thanks for the Halloween v-gift! It's a much cuter spider than those who have sought refuge in our flat...

I KNOW, RIGHT? Also, they were making googly eyes at each other almost the entire time Beckett was in the bank. Considering Trapper John had been referring to Castle as her "boyfriend" pretty much the entire episode, you'd think he might get just a little bit suspicious?

Still, though, I agree on it being a decent episode. And Martha being awesome is always nice.

I just finished watching it, and it was a pretty cool deviation from routine; I actually really liked that Beckett & co. didn't just run in with guns blazing, as so many other plots have done. Also agree on Martha's coolness and Alexis's breakup. And now I'm picturing Martha dating the loan officer and wondering whether it would be funny or just cliche.

As soon as the Sal guy showed up, I was all, "Ooh, the robbers have a mole amongst the hostages! What a fun twist!" But then they dropped him for a while, and I just assumed that the writers were dull and boring and went for a generic storyline. But then he turned out to be a mole after all! For once I underestimated Castle! The various other stupidities of the mercs were... much more in line with my current expectations. Alas.

Hoorayyyyyy no more Ashley!! Maybe now we'll get the old Alexis back!

Beckett being obviously thrilled to see Castle alive, to the point where Martha had to remind her there were other people waiting to have their zip-tie handcuffs cut off, was sweet.

That was so out of character for Martha! Martha is not gonna interfere with Epic Googly Eyes for the sake of a fiddly little problem like being handcuffed!

And then as it kept exceeding my low expectations, I raised them higher and higher until it stopped meeting them.

Oh, the danger of having faith in a show!

She'd probably tell the other hostages to keep out of the Epic Googly Eye Moment too.

Pregnant Teller: "I think I'm about to go into la-"
Martha: "SHUSH CAN'T YOU SEE THEY'RE HAVING A MOMENT??"
