Body of Proof 2.07: "Hard Knocks"
Nov. 1st, 2011 10:51 pm...Yeah, it's never a good sign when the case is the most interesting part of an episode.
Though it actually was a reasonably good case. Occasionally suspicious deaths are accidental and not homicides, shocker! Also, Jay O. Sanders is always a win.
However, the plot about Megan's family made me want to beat my head against the wall repeatedly. As he often is, Bud was the only character holding this episode together. More in the scene by scene reactions:
"Well, as long as we're back in high school." Theme for the night? Ooof.
Megan: The party didn't stop just because you got old.
Bud: You do mean "we," don't you?
*cough cough* Considering DD is seven years older than JCL...
"I was too busy being a nerd." Hee! Awww, I can just picture nerdy high schooler Megan! Okay one thing this episode did right: the women are proud, successful nerds. Occasionally this show can be the successful feminist series it's obviously aiming to be!
And Peter was one of the cool kids. Since Megan later admits that she had crushes on all the popular boys, I think we need to see this in fic. (Preferably not via a high school AU, because I can't stand those, but this could make for excellent banter!)
"It's a meeting of the Where's My Cause of Death? Committee." Bud was excellent tonight.
Even if I hadn't latched on to Megan/Peter like a big ol' latchy thing, I think I would've found Megan/Derek pretty blah. That said, the two of them flirting in Latin was kind of adorkable. I kind of feel bad for all of their colleagues who had to watch that, though...
So this is where the shot of Ethan in the feather boa in the season preview came from! Also, I think my brain just broke at the sight of him and Curtis reliving their raver days or whatever the hell it was they were doing there.
Show: OMG Todd got a job in California he's going to take Lacey what will Megan dooooo isn't it ANGSTY?!?!?!
Me: Oh, give me a break.
I admit, I was kind of rooting for Todd and Lacey to get the hell out of Philadelphia, even though I know it will never happen. Although I sort of like Lacey these days, I guess.
(Hilariously, this was the last episode filmed in Rhode Island before the production moved to...California.)
*headdesk* at Todd basically leaving it up to Lacey whether he takes the job or not. PARENTING 101, JESUS. I hate children and even I know that's a terrible idea.
Hated Bud being a walking stereotype about kids these days, but loved that a.) Sam called him on it, and b.) it got explained later. More on that in a bit.
Further *headdesking* at Megan's blatant attempt to drive a wedge between Lacey and Todd. This whole "moving to California" plot was one of the stupidest things the show's done yet.
Perhaps the biggest *headdesk* of all: I think we were supposed to view Todd having to put his career second to Megan's while Lacey was young as somehow worse than, I dunno, ALL THE WOMEN WHO GO AND/OR ARE FORCED ONTO THE "MOMMY TRACK" AT WORK WHILE THEIR HUSBAND'S CAREER FLOURISHES. Yeah, I have no sympathy for you, Toddster. Sucks that you had to put your career on the back burner for a few years, but if you didn't want that, I would advise either not marrying someone like Megan or not having a child.
(Granted, they haven't given us much of a picture of their former marriage, so it's possible that they could have tried to make their career sacrifices more equitable, but neurosurgery strikes me as an all-or-nothing kind of profession, even moreso than lawyering, and I'm doubtful that would've worked out well.)
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA at Todd asking Kate to come with him to California. Is he really that much of an idiot? YOU'VE KNOWN HER FOR LIKE TWO MONTHS. This episode is hurting my brain more than usual.
HOLY SHIT BUD'S GOING TO BE A FATHER. Well. That...certainly came out of left field. But I like it! He's kind of the only character the writers seem to have a handle on at the moment (it pains me that this is so, but it's true), so at least that will probably be handled well and humorously. (Like the fact that he first revealed it to Sam while interrogating a suspect because he'd been trying to think of a good way to tell her and couldn't! Awwww!)
Kate: Remember when I told you to get some friends? Since I've known you, [Derek] is the only person I've seen you light up around. Call him.
But but but Megan lights up around Peter too! :( Also, Kate matchmaking for Megan just makes me roll my eyes. (Although I'm fanwanking that her actual motive there was to distract Megan from her anti-Todd vendetta.)
I still question whether a twelve-year-old could possibly be so articulate about such subjects, but yay to Lacey for telling her parents off about their bullshit parenting skills. Kids don't get to decide whether a parent takes a job out of state! Nor should they get guilt-tripped about the remaining parent's happiness if they decide to follow the first parent out of state!
Heh, it was so obvious that Todd wasn't going to take the job that the show didn't even bother to tell us he didn't. First smart thing they did in relation to this story in the whole episode!

Date: 2011-11-06 02:45 am (UTC)Also, I'm not sure why the idea of Megan eventually following to LA was never even mentioned. I thought Lacey might have brought it up. There are dead bodies in LA too and it's not like Megan really has a life outside of work...?
Still love Bud. Bud is amazing.

Date: 2011-11-06 06:03 am (UTC)You've made the excellent life choice of skipping most of this season. The Megan/Kate feuding has been dire.
Lacey seems to be about a million times more well-adjusted than I would have expected. Maybe Kate's a good influence on her?
Bwahahaha, there was just an episode where Megan was horrified that Lacey wanted "bondage shoes" like Kate's! Seriously, though, those shoes were ugly and way inappropriate for a twelve-year-old.
Also, I'm not sure why the idea of Megan eventually following to LA was never even mentioned.
Hmmm. Good question. Maybe it's not so easy to transfer jobs like that?
Still love Bud. Bud is amazing.
Bud is definitely the best-handled character on this show. Sadly, because the others have such potential!
