Hmmm. I don't really know what to do with this episode. There were good parts, which I'll get to in a bit, but mostly I came away annoyed that the show is trying to get me to care about the transparent shapeshifter plot when there are MORE IMPORTANT THINGS they could be doing, like getting Peter to a point where he realizes this is his home and he has to get everyone to remember him.

I was spoiled for David Robert Jones's return (damn you, uncut Tumblr photos!), so the revelation that he's behind the new shapeshifters didn't have as much of an impact as it might have. Although I am rather alarmed that Alt-Broyles seems to be in cahoots with him. SEE IF ANYONE BRINGS YOU BACK FROM THE DEAD AGAIN.

Poor Peter is always going to be a pawn, isn't he? First he was kidnapped, then he was prophecied to go into the machine, then he had to delete himself from existence to stop the apocalypse, and now he's forced into being an emissary from Redverse. Sucks to be Peter.

Much as I enjoyed Peter's dream about breakfast at the Bishop-Dunham household, I'm starting to feel like it's an inadequate bone being tossed my way. Could we maybe get one of Olivia's dreams? Some hint that the Amber characters are starting to remember Peter and/or their Blueverse selves? Because I still miss them, show. You might think you're distracting me with shapeshifters, but you aren't.

Hmmm, so did Walter go to St. Claire's much earlier in this timeline? It sounded like Elizabeth killed herself quite soon after Red!Peter drowned, and Walter linked that to his breakdown pretty explicitly. So maybe there was no fire, and Carla Warren is still around?

The military taking over a Fringe Division operation was...unexpected.

SO APPARENTLY NISSAN IS SPONSORING THE SHOW THIS YEAR, HUH? That was some loving product placement in Olivia's electric car there!

Hmmmm, apparently the universes AREN'T still actively apocalypsing! You might have pointed this out earlier, show. I guess they need to fix the ambered-over holes in Redverse at some point, though. But...wow, I guess things did get way better without Peter. Except for the part where I don't actually like any of the Amber characters very much.

Haha, Amber!Lincoln can actually be kind of snarky! Maybe when he puts on Red!Lincolnesque clothing he gets an automatic snark infusion. (Speaking of Amber!Linc, what's up with him and Amberlivia? They're doing the whole monkey grooming thing, and chicken soup has appeared, but Nina's drugs did cause her to stand him up at the diner...)

UM. Peter, run that "Redlivia is fundamentally a good person" thing by me again? Because a.) while I can see where someone would agree with that, I can't quite bring myself to do the same (sorry, her shooting the deaf guy and the mom in the restroom still manages to outweigh her defiance of Walternate at the end of last season), and b.) Peter last saw her when she was in handcuffs immediately before she returned to Redverse, so how would he even know about any the redemptive activities the audience saw?

OMG, Elizabeth recognizes Peter on sight! FINALLY. If our regulars can't manage it, I suppose this will do as a stopgap measure. I liked her repetition of the words Walter said to Blue!Elizabeth in "Peter," that while their Peter was gone they could at least take comfort in the thought that in some other universe, he would grow up and have a life. (Though I hope they don't try to do too many of these repetitions. I want my Blueverse characters back, not new-timeline people doing retreads of conversations they had.)

So...add Lincoln to the list of characters who can have UST with himself. The maintenance closet scene was kind of hilarious. I've always enjoyed Redlivia and Red!Lincoln's friendly working relationship, so I was glad to see more of that on display. (I...take it Scarlie is on the longest honeymoon in the history of the world?)

Okay, Brandonate as a shapeshifter did make me sit up and take notice. I was certain Walternate was behind the shapeshifters, maybe working in concert with RDJ, so him killing Brandonate was unexpected.

In fact, Walternate was kind of a revelation in this episode, and one of the few bits I wholeheartedly enjoyed. I guess since Peter never convinced baby!Olivia to tell Walter about her stepfather's abuse, she never accidentally crossed over and left her notebook with the incriminating Olivia + Peter picture with Walternate, and Walternate didn't have 25 years to breed resentment that Walter got to have Peter. (I wonder what he thought happened? Just that Peter had been kidnapped for unknown reasons by unknown persons and died of his disease?) It definitely made him a more sympathetic person (not to mention, apparently, a better husband, since he and Elizabeth are still married), though I suppose he could be running some kind of long con in regards to the shapeshifters. I get the impression he isn't, though, since the "You're exactly the man I thought you would be" line seemed sincere enough.

Eeeep! Why did someone shoot September??

NO. NO, THERE IS DEFINITELY A TIMELINE WHERE OLIVIA DOESN'T HAVE TO DIE, SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP. (Yeah, we all know Peter and Walter aren't going to stand for that!)
