EEEEEEE, THAT WAS AWESOME!
Well, okay, the case of the week was dumb and felt like it had been done before--I could be very tired of people hearing other people's thoughts and voices over long distances on this show; they've gone to that well a lot--but the rest of it was Grade A Fabulous, especially the ending.
(OMG THE ENDING! So have we really been watching Red!Nina since "Wallflower," if not earlier? Because THAT IS SOME EXCELLENT JUDO, WRITERS, and it almost makes me forgive your criminal underuse of Nina for the past three and a half years, since we know too much about everyone else for that to work with any other doppelganger pair.)
Also also also, AWWWWW, Peter's scared of treating Olivia like Bluelivia because he's made this mistake before! And he comes right out and says it! Tehehehe. I liked the callback to "Marionette" in the car at the end, where he said he looked into her eyes and saw she was his Olivia even when he was telling himself she couldn't be.
Though did Olivia strike anyone as odd, with her, "La la la, I know this should be strange, but I'm not scared, let's go have sex!" throughout most of the episode? I know this must be related to the cartoon episode I disliked so much last year, and I know Olivia said that her Amber memories were now hazy and dreamlike (speaking of which, dude, I feel prophetic), but for the life of me I can't quite understand why she isn't at least somewhat concerned that she's just had a full-scale personality transplant. Not that I would want to stand in the way of any of those adorable face-nuzzles and general making out in the car, of course (BECAUSE THAT WAS ADORABLE), but...I dunno, this feels a little cavalier.
Anyway. Thoughts in something resembling chronological order:
I was shocked and amazed that they actually opened right where they left off last week instead of in the lab. Hooray! I also liked the gradual filtering of Blue over Amber that seemed to happen for Olivia from the moment she kissed Peter in her apartment through the first scene in the lab. Like last week, only speeded up.
Wait, so Peter has really been back for three months? He's been in as much hell as we have? I was trying to console myself about the pacing of this season by pretending it wasn't taking nearly as long in show time (especially since "Subject 9" through "Wallflower" were stated onscreen to take something like a week), but apparently not. Gaaaaah.
Hmmmm, were those flashes of blue in the orange credits near the end, or was I just seeing things?
Oh oh oh, Walter is still getting out of the lab! Yay! COME ON, BLUE, COME BACK TO WALTER TOO! (Of course, it was to a mental institution, which is different from a town in Vermont. Though he wasn't nearly as freaked out about being there as you might expect.)
Heh, when Olivia showed up at Peter's door, I wondered where her whiskey bottle was. At least she mentioned remembering the night she brought it!
Ohhhh, Olivia, you look so happy that your Blue memories are coming back! I'M HAPPY TOO! *high-five*
Okay, so the Olivia-empathically-picking-up-Peter's-memories theory was obviously proven wrong (and honestly it was pretty shaky to begin with, even for Fringe), but I worry that it's going to come back in some way. STAY BLUE, OLIVIA, STAY BLUE!
Finally, someone notices how pretty Astrid is!
Walter. Walter, your teabag is about to burst into flames, Walter. Take it away from the Bunsen burner.
Eeeee, the handholding was adorable. And yet Walter interrupts it! Obviously he's still mostly Amber, because Blue!Walter would never interrupt a handholding and googly eyes moment!
"Take me to the bridge." For a moment there, I was wondering when I'd tuned into a Star Trek episode.
Yaaaaay, Peter's not projecting the memories!
Bwahaha, I loved the whole bit where Astrid calls Olivia freaking out about the bad guys coming for them, the dramatic lights from the car driving up, the dramatic music, the scared looks--and then Olivia and Peter just take them out in about five seconds, and the next scene has them without a hair out of place. Such a good team!
*snort* How convenient that when you need a gas station kidnapping, they're driving an SUV instead of the Leaf...
"I'm sorry, I just really have to pee."
...
...
...
For a minute there, I was wondering if Olivia had been replaced by a shapeshifter, because since when does Olivia Dunham, Superwoman, have to do something as mundane as use the bathroom? Also, perhaps one of the most awkward ways to set up a kidnapping ever?
(I can just imagine the writers' room conversation: "Dammit, I need to get her away from Peter for a minute so she can be kidnapped, but how can I do that after this intense emotional scene after which they will obviously be attached at the hip?!" Bodily functions to the rescue!)
Oooooooooh, (Red)Nina, things are not looking good for you right now.
Let me reiterate that that ending was one of the most awesome moments of this season so far. YAY.
