Oh, hockey stops, why tormentest me thou?

Speaking of butchered Middle English, that the time-traveling(ish) kid came from the lost colony of Roanoke, somehow transplanted to Sleepy Hollow, did not surprise me in the least. Of course he did. Why all the colonists spoke Middle English, though, is a mystery entirely. Uhhhhh, 1590 is about 200 years too late for that, writers!

But let's assume, for the moment, that in actualfax the colonists of Roanoke spoke Middle English. Tom Mison, bless his heart, gave it his fair show, pre-Great Vowel Shift long vowels and all, though I quibble with some of the vocabulary and grammar. But do you know how many dialects of Middle English, not all of them exactly intelligible with each other, there were? (Hint: A lot.) The chances he and the kid would've been able to understand each other are small.

Also, if Crane is actually a history professor, then you know what he would've been doing in this episode is camping out in the ghost town and going, "OMG colonists at Roanoke spoke Middle English! This overturns so much we knew about linguistics! I MUST STUDY IT AND WRITE A PAPER!"

Anyway. In addition to getting the details wrong, this episode was, frankly, dull. As it ended, I seriously contemplated not bothering with the rest, but then they had to go and have John Noble in the preview for the next episode. Guess I'm sticking around for another week.
