Ganked from
shaye.
Born & raised in Nashville, TN by Nashvillian father (grandparents from Kentucky), Floridian/Nashvillian mother (grandparents from Ohio-ish). Been going to college in Ohio for a year and a half, but have spent overwhelming majority of 19-year-old life in TN. Dialect is mostly urban southern--aka generic American with some interesting vocab thrown in, tied up in a bow with a bit of a twang, I suppose.
1. A body of water, smaller than a river, contained within relatively narrow banks?
Creek or stream. (The first one is pronounced with a long "e" usually, although if I'm tired I might say "crick.")
2. What's the thing you push around the grocery store/supermarket?
Shopping cart. Buggy, if I'm feeling facetious.
3. A metal container to carry a meal in?
Lunch pail. Lunchboxes are plastic or that Artic fabric-y insulation stuff.
4. The thing that you cook bacon and eggs in?
Frying pan.
5. The piece of furniture that seats three people?
Couch.
6. The device on the outside of the house that carries rain off the roof?
Gutter.
7. The covered area outside a house where people sit in the evening?
Porch (covered and wooden). Patios are uncovered and cement, decks are uncovered and wooden.
8. Carbonated, sweetened, non-alcoholic beverages?
Coke. Don't care what kind it is, it's all coke, dammit. (I think inherent in the pronunciation is the capital or lowercase letter--lowercase if you say "I want a coke" and don't care if it's Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Sprite, whatever; uppercase if you're offered the choice between Coke and Pepsi and want a Coke.) If I specifically want a Sprite or root beer or whatever in a restaraunt, I will say the name, but at home, we only have one carbonated beverage in the fridge at any time, so if you say "I want a coke" you get whatever's cold.
9. A flat, round breakfast food served with syrup?
Pancake.
10. A long sandwich designed to be a whole meal in itself?
Sub.
11. The piece of clothing worn by men at the beach?
Bathing suit.
12. Shoes worn for sports?
Tennis shoes, I guess. My first thought was cleats, since most people wear tennis shoes for things outside of sports...
13. Putting a room in order?
Clean up, tidy up, straighten up (rare).
14. A flying insect that glows in the dark?
Lightning bug or firefly.
15. The little insect arthropod that curls up into a ball?
Ummm...what? I don't remember ever seeing one of these things.
16. The children's playground equipment where one kid sits on one side and goes up while the other sits on the other side and goes down?
See-saw.
17. How do you eat your pizza?
Um...sliced? I guess with two hands and a plate or part of the pizza box. Maybe a knife and fork if it's one of the really messy (but so good) ones we make at home.
18. What's it called when private citizens put up signs and sell their used stuff?
Yard sale. Maybe garage sale if I feel like it--doesn't matter if there's a garage present or not.
19. What's the evening meal?
Dinner or supper. "Dinner" more when I'm at school and everyone calls it that; "supper" more at home. (Breakfast/lunch/dinner is equivalent to breakfast/dinner/supper. Lunch is a new word.)
20. The thing under a house where the furnace and perhaps a rec room are?
Basement if you can go down there and get something accomplished (we don't have furnaces in Nashville, for the most part...or at least I've never seen one...yay TVA with cheap electricity for heating!). Cellar or unfinished basement if you're gonna store something there, but not do anything else (i.e. it's not heated). Crawl space if you can't stand up in it.
