Why do they have to take the pictures in the .5 seconds that the skaters up in the air, spinning around at millions of miles an hour, and having their faces all smushed out of shape by the centrifugal force?
'cause they're sports photographers, and the action shot always makes the best shot - regardless of whether it actually looks better at all.

*grumbles about how footwork, spirals, basic skating and other things where the skaters aren't spinning around count just as much as the jumps and spins* Yeah, yeah, like AP photographers would know that, I know.

Is there a mandatory "lack of taste" test that must be done to become an ice skater at that level?

Hmmm...somehow I don't think so. ;) Other people who are much more knowledgable than me have been trying for years to no avail.
