Johnny Weir (who, like me, is 19 but looks way, way younger)
Johnny Weir mid-jump in a really terrible AP photograph
Poor guy. If I were him, I'd go out and strangle the photographer with his or her camera strap... ;)

Date: 2004-01-12 11:35 am (UTC)It's just that this photographer caught him as he was finishing a jump, so all the rapid spinning made his face fly out of shape. Every skater has a "jump face" like that, although usually not quite that weird, and the AP photographers seem determined to catch every one of them.

Or the people the Associated Press sends out to photograph these events need to take classes in basic photography...there are so many beautiful positions that skaters strike in their programs. Why do they have to take the pictures in the .5 seconds that the skaters up in the air, spinning around at millions of miles an hour, and having their faces all smushed out of shape by the centrifugal force?

'cause they're sports photographers, and the action shot always makes the best shot - regardless of whether it actually looks better at all.

Date: 2004-01-12 05:12 pm (UTC)Remember the "fashion police" icon I had a while back, with the Israeli ice dancers who looked like clowns? That's only a little worse than typical.

*grumbles about how footwork, spirals, basic skating and other things where the skaters aren't spinning around count just as much as the jumps and spins* Yeah, yeah, like AP photographers would know that, I know.

That's only a little worse than typical.
Is there a mandatory "lack of taste" test that must be done to become an ice skater at that level?
Yeah, yeah, like AP photographers would know that, I know.
Perhaps it's your calling to educate them?

Is there a mandatory "lack of taste" test that must be done to become an ice skater at that level?
It's very possible.
Perhaps it's your calling to educate them?
Hmmm...somehow I don't think so. ;) Other people who are much more knowledgable than me have been trying for years to no avail.
