A quick search on Google turned up <a href-"http://www.cwol.com/firewire/firewire-vs-usb.htm">this page</a>, which says that FireWire is faster. I have no idea if that's actually true, but the page's explanation makes sense.

Plus the Dell one isn't Mac-compatible. I couldn't use it anyway. ;)

I know that Firewire is faster than regular USB, but I thought USB 2.0 was supposed to be almost as fast. It's also something most PC's have, while few have Firewire cards.

Also, I've read that the PC integration of the I-POD leaves something to be desired. In addition, the best quality songs now use WMA format, something that the iPod doesn't support.

There's also the big price difference. Not that I'm in the market for an iPod like device, but it is significant.

As an owner of an original 5GB iPod, I always have to decide whether to be happy when somebody buys a new iPod, or plot to steal it.

I'm leaning towards being happy. :)

As for the above discussion of Dell's Digital Music Jukebox, remember the following (feel free to skip if you don't want to read pro-Apple propaganda):

1) Apple is actually innovating with the iPod and is constantly refining it. The Dell Jukebox is merely a player that a third party makes and Dell stamps its name on. That's really where the extra $100 goes.

2) Most online music stores sell songs as wma's, true. But iTunes is beating the pants off those stores and, quite frankly, why settle for BuyMusic.com (among others) when you have iTunes?

3) The iPod has style. Dell's player is fairly ugly (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?sku=DJSTD15&c=us&l=en&cs=19&category_id=5906&page=external) considering it looks a decent amount like an iPod. And it's called the "Dell Digital Music Jukebox." It's Fonzie and Ralph Malph here. Nobody wants to hang around Ralph Malph if Fonzie's around.

And, to carry the Happy Days metaphor further in a way that I hadn't originally planned, Fonzie always beats up the Jukebox...

I think the bottom line is that if you're a PC person, the Dell may work out better, while if you're an Apple person go with the iPod.
