BSG, wheee!

So, thanks to rowdycamels and her DVD region-converter o' wonder, plus the free trial of Blockbuster's version of Netflix, I finally got to see the rest of the BSG mini! Woot!

The second half wasn't quite as good as the first half, I don't think, which I'm sure is probably a slightly unpopular opinion, but...why the hell did Cmdr. Adama change his mind so fast? He was all "let's go fight the war, woo-hoo!" and then he sees Billy-boy and Uhura 2.0 making eyes at each other (and what was up with that, anyway? They knew each other for, what, five minutes, and she's sticking her tongue down his throat? Is there backstory there that I missed?) and suddenly he's all, "hey, Roslin's right, let's go make babies"? I...ow. I feel like I must have missed something there. Speaking of Roslin's making-babies speech...um, there wasn't subtext there at all. Heh. I have to admit that that was kind of amusing.

As are Kara and Lee, somewhat. Where have we seen the I-slept-with-your-dead-brother-but-now-I-have-lots-of-UST-with-you situation before? Hmmm. Invisible Man, anyone? Heh.

Actually, there was a lot of "cribbed" stuff in this...not the least of which was Six-as-Harvey. Well, with a dress held up by Elmer's instead of an all-leather getup (at that point, anyway; I think the image of that leather underwear set is burned on to my retinas, thank you very much), but she's basically Harvey. And sort of like Irina Derevko, too, with the whole I-seduced-you-for-defense-secrets bit.

And now they're off in the Uncharted Territories...hunting for Earth *coughVoyagercough*, in a war with things that look like people and can't really be traced *coughDS9'sFounderscough*, and trying to repopulate some planet they've never been to *coughMissionGenesiscough*. And it's all overlaid with a fine patina of Space: Above and Beyond, too.

Although I have no idea how much like the original series this one is, so for all I know, all of that was around in 1980(?), well before any of these other shows were even conceived, so I suppose I can't really criticize until I know more about that.

That octagonal paper, though, now that's original. *rolls eyes* Why? Why have that on printouts and photos, but not on books or computer screens? Are there planets filled with the cut-off corners of these things? I get the need to be distinctive visually, but that just drove me crazy, whereas the radar screens are totally awesome, but original-looking as well.

I'm a little confused about where all these people come from, though; from the dialogue, it sounded like they didn't think they were originally from Earth, but yet they call themselves human, they are human, and they named all their colonies after the Zodiac, so they really must have come from Earth. Again, I think I missed something.

Anyway. All that isn't to say I didn't think the writing was pretty good, the acting quite good, and the music and visuals (except for that damned octagonal paper) awesome. Totally looking forward to finally seeing the series this summer. But the mini could have been improved somewhat, is all. And though I've been trying to avoid spoilers for the series, I've gotten the vague impression from you guys that the series does improve upon the mini, whcih makes me happy. :)

(But one thing? Get. A. Tripod. OMG. I was seriously starting to get motionsick around the halfway mark between the wobbly camera and the insistence of having the camera go round and round and round people who are talking in a circle. Dude. That was one thing from Farscape I could have lived without.)

Hmmm. I actually need to do stuff tomorrow, like laundry and visiting the Coinstar at Sainsbury's with my bag o' pence, don't I? I should go to bed, or something.

Mmmm, probably. I enjoyed most of the components of the mini, but the whole didn't rise above them for me like it seems to have done for several people on my flist and an SF forum I frequent. (Maybe you had to have seen the original?) Perhaps I'll have a better reaction to the series.

Thanks for the info. Hmmm, I guess I can accept it more with that knowledge (although now I want to strangle whoever first came up with the idea). I...practicality! Planets filled with little paper triangles! Argh! *g*

That was one thing from Farscape I could have lived without.

Oh, c'mon, how can you say that? Farscape took Wacky Camera Vision and did wonderful dramatic things with it (well, usually...). BSG took the idea and... handed it to a cameraman with Parkinson's. Oof.

I'll give Farscape the seasick-camera-angles for Crackers Don't Matter, but all of the other ones...duuuude, Andrew Prowse, calm down and get a tripod!

Although I think my problem with BSG's camera op lies mostly in those horrible round and round and round we go shots. Oof. Good thing there was only one of them after we had those muffins, that's all I have to say.

As someone (I'm assuming a guy) said, Six is a dramatic improvement on the concept of Harvey. Heh.

And the series is an improvement on the mini.

It seemed like it might be. I'm not really fond of the mini as a format and most minis themselves...it seems like most of them either need to be a series, or need some editing into a movie.

The colonies were colonized by Earthlings a loooooooooooooooooooooong time ago. And they basically forgot that Earth exists, they're not sure where to find it anymore. So they are quite human, they're just not from Earth. And the show itself is great. I mean, I love the whole concept of religion. The humans are basically polytheists and the Cylons are monotheists with a sort of Christian tradition happening. Soooo cool.

I did find the Cylons-believe-in-God bit intriguing. Hopefully they follow up on it in the show (but don't spoil me!).

I thought that might be what had happened, but the dialogue could have been clearer. *grumble grumble*
