There's a dog (nearly full-grown puppy, really) that's been running around our neighborhood lately. She looks like some mixture of pit bull and beagle, so Mom came up with the portmanteau of "pit beagle." As there's no tag on her collar, that's become her name when she comes by the house. She's so cute! To wit:

Awww, what a cutie!

But that just makes me all the more angry that people let their pets run around loose. Because the "awww, cute" too often becomes "aww, poor baby" when the next time you see it, it's dead along the side of the road.

We have a pretty big problem with animals running around loose in our neighborhood. There's another neighborhood dog around (an Australian Shepherd mix of some kind), and there used to be a Rottweiler that would come up the street very occasionally. And some people on the corner had, seriously, about twenty cats that they just let roam around. They all disappeared a while ago, though. Hmmm.

At least the road is only used by people who live on it (there's not even a dividing line of any kind painted on the asphalt), and everyone drives ~10 mph on it. The dogs seem to know not to venture any further than this street.
