But! Mysteries of Udolpho!! I haven't read it, but we talked about it in Austen contexts so much that I feel like I've read it. After you finish it, you should totally read Northanger Abbey - it's one big mockery of Udolpho and Radcliffe's ilk (and if you want *really* sketchy gothic, try The Monk...), and it's much different from the rest of the Austen canon. Highly amusing. Sadly, no nuns.
I have Northanger Abbey in my bookcase. I think I tried it, but didn't get very far for some reason. I think I still need another year or two to release my hatred of Persuasion enough to read another Austen book.
Northanger Abbey is the anti-Persuasion! Really, if I had to put all of Austen in a spectrum based on... any characteristic... those two would be at opposite ends. Having just read Udolpho will make it even more amusing, I'm sure.
