A drinking question
Apr. 6th, 2007 09:34 pmI don't drink, and consequently know nothing about alcohol. Thus, I put this to those who do: Fraser, Thatcher, and either RayV or RayK (I haven't decided yet) walk into a bar. What do they order? Water for Fraser, I know, but what about the other two?
(This has nothing to do with taking advantage of the fact that dS and Cupid are both set in Chicago during roughly the same span of years. Nothing at all. *whistles innocently*)*
Still working on the Yukon one, BTW. After 4,500 words, Fraser and Thatcher are finally setting off on the dogsledding trip that's the whole point of the fic. Er. They kept wanting to talk, and then there were of course awkward silences and half-finished sentences, and a dead body plays a rather large part in the whole thing, so that had to be dealt with...
I'm really not making anyone want to read this fic, am I?
* And yes, I realize that in all likelihood I'm the only person on the whole internet who would want to read such a thing, but writing for one's own pleasure is a worthy purpose, right? Right.

Date: 2007-04-07 04:03 am (UTC)I remember the coffee mug. I think it was probably herbal tea. It's either canon or extremely pervasive fanon that he really likes herbal tea, and isn't terribly fond of coffee.
...Except for when he's asking certain Inspectors out on dates, and then apparently he can stomach it rather well. ;)
I guess it depends on what sort of bar you've got him in...
Well, it's Taggarty's, of course. He might go for tea or coffee; I think they were supposed to serve lunch and dinner-type stuff as well as drinks. But it might be easier just to have him ask for a bottle of water.

The smell? Although this dead body has been sitting out in the giant freezer that is the Northwestern Territories in March for a while, so I guess he doesn't stink much.
But it provides the gimmick to get them out in dogsleds, and that's never a bad thing. ;)

Date: 2007-04-07 04:33 am (UTC)But I'm not quite positive on the other two, honestly.

Date: 2007-04-07 04:40 am (UTC)And Thatcher, I bet, orders a beer when she wants to be "one of the boys" and a froofy fruity mixed drink when she doesn't.

Things mixed with gin seem to be a popular choice in fic for RayV. I have no idea if this is plausible or not. For Thatcher...I'd think something incredibly plain and conventional, like a glass of wine, or maybe a beer.
But really, I know nothing about alcohol, so I could be way off. (Can you even order wine in a vaguely-but-not-really-Irish-themed bar/pub, I wonder?)

Date: 2007-04-07 04:50 am (UTC)Thank you for answering my question before I'd even asked it. ;)
Maybe shots?
Shots of...?
And Thatcher, I bet, orders a beer when she wants to be "one of the boys" and a froofy fruity mixed drink when she doesn't.
Somehow she doesn't strike me as going for froo-froo stuff in any part of her life, but it wouldn't ping me as terribly out of place if I read it, I guess. I think it probably would depend on her mood at the time. FWIW, this is set the evening after a long, irritating day in court or something. (I need her to be in the Mountie uniform purely so my "The British are coming!" joke will work. *g*)

Date: 2007-04-07 04:50 am (UTC)I mean, I can't see him drinking hard liquer, or even wine. But beer? Yeah, I can see Fraser drinking beer.
And you can get wine in most bars, it's just going to be really, really bad wine that a true wine drinker wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole. The kind that comes out of a box.

Date: 2007-04-07 04:56 am (UTC)And in that scenario, I'd almost have Thatcher ordering a cosmopolitan, or something - which is basically a martini with cranberry juice. Sort of the "I'm relaxed and being me" drink instead of the "I am one of the boys!" drink or the "Despite the uniform I am, in fact, female!" drink.

Good to know! Thank you.

Ah. Okay, that makes sense. I can definitely see her with that last statement running through her head. *g*

Date: 2007-04-07 01:01 pm (UTC)*looks at Wiki* And it was created by Rob Thomas, the guy who created Veronica Mars, which is another show that I didn't really watch due to scheduling issues that I thought was awesome when I did catch it (and just don't watch now because the awesomeness doesn't make up for two seasons of not catching it).
Anyway, no, you are not alone in your crazy. :)

Hee. I just keep thinking of all the ways Trevor could make Fraser blush like a stop sign, and then I sit here cackling like a loon.

Date: 2007-04-08 07:04 pm (UTC)Hrm... I vaguely remember herbal tea, and I haven't read any fanon.
And now I'm picturing a verrrry caffeinated Fraser, so perhaps coffee is a bad idea? Or an awesome one?
...Except for when he's asking certain Inspectors out on dates, and then apparently he can stomach it rather well. ;)
WHY DID THEY NOT SHOW THAT ONSCREEN OH THE CRUELTY!!
But it might be easier just to have him ask for a bottle of water.
Yeah, probably. I could almost see him getting a beer, if he were off-duty, but there's probably some code against drinking in uniform, anyway...
But it provides the gimmick to get them out in dogsleds, and that's never a bad thing. ;)
Gimmicks make the world go round.

I'm leaning towards "awesome," myself.

Probably so. Besides, if he orders water, I can have Trevor make fun of him.

They do indeed.

Always a positive outcome!
Absolutely!

As soon as I finish the dogsledding ooooone... (5,000 words later, they're finally starting out towards the burial spot!)

*squees* Making that icon seems to have gotten me over a block in my dogsledding story. Now they're sharing a tent. Awkwardly.

Date: 2007-04-16 04:49 am (UTC)Yeah, me too, except.... the XF version was so incredibly much better? And I kept thinking about how I'd rather be watching the XF... But wasn't that a great XF ep? With the cheesy, cheesy ending? And the Violating Personal Space In The Name Of Official Crucial Baseball-Educating Disinterested-ness Yes Very Really? Awesome.

"Hips before hands...yes, your hips should be moving right up against mine in exactly that way. Just like that."

Mmm, awkwardness. It's getting long enough that I've broken it up into three chapters/parts/divisions. Oof.

I'm tryiiiiing... I checked out a bunch of awesome books from the library last weekend, so that's been distracting me. But I'm trying to do at least 400 words a day, and I'm mostly succeeding...
