Today I put up my Christmas tree! (My parents and I used to share a big one, but about six or seven years ago, we amassed so many ornaments that we had to split off, kind of like yeast budding. The little tree is basically mine to do with as I please.)

Those of you who've been following this journal for some time may have noticed that I like birds. I like to take pictures of them. I like to identify them. I like to read poetry about them. I like to use them as themes for my own writing. So it should probably come as no shock that my Christmas tree is approximately 40% birds.

(Those of you who've been exchanging Christmas cards with me for several years will no doubt be unsurprised to see that most of my ornaments fall into the categories of songbirds, penguins, [polar] bears, or ice skates/skaters. It's good to have themes. :D)

This year, I took pictures. Under the cut are the ones I actually liked. There are many.

Four feet of glory.

Like I said, I've got lots of birds:

Quadruple-decker birds! And these are only a few.

Swan! Courtesy of Chandra.

The owl is new this year. HEARTS IN MY EYES.

Yes, I even have a bird in a cage.

And BALLS WITH BIRDS ON. These are actually at least fifty years old; they were my grandmother's.

The toucan helps me decorate. I kind of love this ornament.

And we have NOT EVEN STARTED ON THE PENGUINS, or for that matter the BEARS:

SPARKLE!PENGUINS.

Penguin on skis!

This was actually meant to be a picture of my tree-topper, but that was out of focus. It's a fabulous shot of the polar bear's butt, though.

And SKATES:

Here's my Art Deco Deer:

And assorted other shots:

It was awfully cute, I wish I'd thought to get a picture while he was snuggled into it.

Theo and Random are way too big to climb curtains, thank goodness. My family used to have a kitten, long ago, who'd climb up to the top of the curtains and sit on the... what do you call it - the thing that the valance hangs on? The bar that goes across the window that the curtains and valance and all hang on, anyway. She'd just loaf herself up there and look down on everyone who walked by with very blue eyes and a very arch expression on her tiny little face.

Mmm, a cat-specific forcefield is an invention I'm going to be dreaming of, now. That would be lovely. I could put it around food, too - Theoden is quite tall when he wants to be, and will stretch up to try to steal raw chicken or something like that off the counter while I've got my back turned in the kitchen.

Yay! ♥
