Fringe: "The Day We Died"

icepixieOH MY GOD. I HAVE NEVER BEEN THIS DESPERATE FOR THE NEXT SEASON OF SOMETHING SINCE LIKE THAT EPISODE OF THE X-FILES WHERE MULDER SUPPOSEDLY SHOT HIMSELF. WELL, OKAY, MAYBE SINCE S3 OF BSG.
I literally started gasping and yelling about how they could not POSSIBLY end it there when the Bad Robot logo came up after the Observers said that Peter had never existed. AHHHHHHHHHHH THEY HAVE TO GET HIM BACK SOMEHOW AHHHHHHHHH.
Uh, so anyway, THAT WAS INCREDIBLE AND I MUST CAPSLOCK FOR A WHILE. I had doubts about the fifteen years in the future thing, but they totally pulled it off. I figured it would probably be a vision or a warning, but didn't expect time travel to figure into it. Time loops do tend to do my head in, but I liked this one, although now I am DYING to know how they get Peter back to existing.
It was NOT FAIR that they used part of Gorecki's third symphony, because I have a Pavlovian reaction to that piece of music and always start crying when I hear it unexpectedly. On the other hand, it was fair warning that the episode would be sad sad sad. And Walternate shooting Olivia like that was both shocking and very sad, especially after that sweet, sweet scene she and Peter had together in their kitchen. At least they had fifteen years of happiness in that timeline, and got married, even if they never felt right about bringing a kid into the world. Or a "tribe of Bishops," for that matter. Oh, Peter and Olivia, I hope one day canon lets you have lots of kids.* The last episode of the series, I want a flash forward by ten years so that we can see them surrounded by three children (and Walter) at, like, a cookout or something. This NEEDS to happen, canon, do you hear me?
Peter at Olivia's funeral might have made me cry just a bit. Though Dear Hollywood, it is NEVER a good idea to have characters speaking but not to mix in the dialogue track. Ever. It always looks like a bad fanvid, no matter how exquisite the music.
Some short things, because I can't write coherent paragraphs at this point:
- Ella! Oh, I love that Ella became a Fringe agent in this timeline!
- I was expecting them to use Brad Dourif way more than they did. I mean, it's Brad freaking Dourif. Come on.
- Uh, apparently "water" is now fringe science according to the credits. Wow. I suppose that goes well with the steak-in-a-can and box o' wine Olivia and Peter were having. (With the way that wine was packaged, all plain white lettering on plain black, I expected it to say, "Table Wine by Apple." The box looked almost exactly like the one my laptop came in.)
- Awww, Olivia can control her telekinesis!
- Of COURSE there's an End of Days cult at this point.
- Senator Broyles? Whoa.
- Peter saying Walter was still his dad...oh, my heart. And I loved how he was still kind of pissed that Walter had been put in jail, and how much he obviously loved him. He still called Walternate "Father," but you could tell it was just because he was trying to stop him.
- And oh, Walter: "I always did want a daughter." Oh, Bishops and Dunhams.
- On a shallow note, Olivia was rocking the shorter hair. I hope she gets it cut that way for S4. I liked Astrid's hair too, although I like her current hair better. And Nina's hat at the funeral was pretty cool.
- So Bell didn't bury the pieces of the machine? Okay. I've thought for a while that there was going to be some finagling of the timeline, but I didn't think it would extend to Walter scattering the pieces of the machine, or to him/all of them actually being the First People. I figured the Observers would be those guys, and they would write the book/make the drawings based on the events of these episodes.
- Everyone facing down their alternate at the end was AWESOME. I've been waiting for this all season.
Basically, this was the BEST EPISODE OF THE SHOW EVER. Is it September yet?
* Preferably before you're 47 and 46, respectively, because even though everyone in this timeline obviously had taken some kind of rejuvenating drug, that still seems a little old for more than maybe one kid. Menopause only waits so long.

Date: 2011-05-07 03:02 am (UTC)I have things to do this weekend, but all I want to do now is sit and watch this episode OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
I love when they use science fiction like this--they told a fucking AWESOME story. A real, moving, human story about love and sacrifice and they utilized old school science fiction in order to do it. OH MY GOD, SHOW!
