Announcing nx_rewatch!

To my great glee, wintercreek agreed to rewatch Northern Exposure with me, and we decided to open it to everyone. JOOOOOIIIINNNN USSSSSSSSS. We're going at the rate of one episode per week, starting with the pilot on Sunday, September 18th. Any and all discussion is welcome, including long meta essays, running commentary, squee, gifs, macros, and anything else you want to bring to the table.

Newbies are welcome (yes, there will be spoilers, but honestly, this show is not ruined by spoilers the way some are), so if you've seen me squee about this show over the years and thought you might want to try it, now would be an excellent time. :D

Related question: I've posted an announcement at the general NX community, and I'm going to pitch the show and announce the comm at fandom_of_one, but NX fandom is tiny and scattered. Does anyone know of other useful general fandom places to advertise a rewatch comm?

All I have seen of this show are the episodes you put on video for me about a million years ago in the days when I had both dial-up and a VHS player. Ah, memories.

I am in the process of obtaining season 1 right now. Hurrah!

... I might could do an episode a week. What's the best way to get them? Netflix? Arg, if only I had Netflix streaming! And it looks like Amazon doesn't stream them... hrm...

Netflix only has them on DVD, not streaming, so I'm not sure of the best way to get them without basically devoting your entire Netflix queue to the series for a couple years. I'm going to send you an e-mail with some other thoughts, though.

Hello hello, you know me! Would I like this show?

asdfghjkl; YES YES A MILLION TIMES YES. :D

The premise isn't terribly similar, but the feeling of the show is very, very much like that of Slings & Arrows. The writing is smart as hell (there are extensive references to Jung, Freud, Walt Whitman, classical mythology, Shakespeare, basically any intellectual topic you care to name), but the show also has a tremendous heart. It makes me cry with some regularity, not because people die or anything but simply because something is so perfect and beautiful and right. At the same time, it's funny as hell. The characters are all sharply-defined, flawed but often heroic at the same time, and they grow and change over the course of the series. Oh, and it's full of magical realism along the lines of Oliver's ghost or the strange things that happened on due South, plus wildly surreal dream sequences. (Actually, it's basically the inverse of dS: take a thoroughly urbanized character and stick him in a quirky wilderness town where Fraser would've felt right at home.)

This clip from the end of a third-season episode is kind of the show in a nutshell, from literary references to crazy art projects to the lovely community spirit it showcases. If it intrigues or amuses you at all, I can pretty much guarantee you'll like the show.

Hey, I was just rewatching a particular episode and thought of you. If you want a really fabulous introduction to the show and the characters--because while it starts strong, they did take a few episodes to gel, and to figure out the best way of including some of the more supporting roles like Marilyn or Ruth-Anne--try the third season's "The Body in Question." Pretty much one of the most perfect hours of TV ever filmed, IMO. :)

Hooray! The DVDs are available through Amazon if you're looking to buy any, but Netflix also has them.

I haven't seen it before, so it'll be new! I think I'll try Netflix first and keep my eye out for a DVD sale at Half Price or something.

But sssh, don't tell anyone. I have to watch Doctor Who or I will lose my geek credentials, and I promised several people I would watch it *right away*.
